Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT Neon Watch Review
Friday - 16 July 2021
When we think of pioneering luxury watch brands of the last half century, one name that tends to be regrettably overlooked is Zodiac. First founded in 1882 by Ariste Calame in the watchmaking capital of Le Locle, Switzerland, Zodiac has committed itself to providing only the best in performance, design, craftsmanship and accuracy – all the traits of a true Swiss manufacturer. They are particularly well known for their pioneering prowess within the diving industry procured predominantly by their legendary Sea Wolf collection. This collection expands once again with the release of the new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT Neon watch, an ultramodern diver’s instrument with unmissable neon green details.
The Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT Neon is nothing short of contemporary. Previous designs of the Sea Wolf have been an obvious reinterpretation of the brand’s original 1960’s sports watches boasting soft silver or ink black dials, classic black bezels, vintage-coloured lume and fine-link bracelets. We always knew colour had a transformative influence on a design, but the addition neon green on the Super Sea Wolf GMT Neon has completely renovated it from a retro skin divers watch to a formidable instrument for the modern-day. The dominating lime green colour generously adorns the 24 hour bezel for the night-time hours from 18 to 6 while a contrasting pure white shade highlights the day-time increments. The same green and white colourway is applied to the dial with the bright green GMT hand beautifully contrasting against the white base. Believe us when we say this pairing of colours is unbelievably striking on the wrist.
Despite its wholly transformative look, the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT Neon surprisingly differs to previous instalments of the Super Sea Wolf GMT collection only for its dial and bezel colourway. The case remains engineered from basic stainless steel and measures to 40 millimetres in diameter. The case’s cylindrical profile and downturned lugs remain a hallmark of the diver’s watch with a slightly more complex finishing on the lugs, including full linear brushing on the tops and sides and a polished chamfer, making it all the more modern. The glossy mineral crystal bezel is adorned with a classic 24 hour scale in black and a luminous triangle marker at 12 o’clock. The Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT Neon watch also boasts a 200 metre water resistant rating helped by a screw in crown at the traditional 3 o’clock position and a screw down case back.
Moving onto the dial, it’s safe to say our eyes are instantly drawn to the neon green GMT hand at the centre. However, the design offers much more than just a highly legible 24 hour complication. The applied rectangular indices, baton shaped hours and minutes hands and needle-tipped seconds hand are beautifully presented in silver and treated to luminous fills for easy readability at night. The polished finish of these silver accents wonderfully reflects the light as the watch moves on your wrist, which in retrospect demand just as much attention as the neon green accents. In contrast, the famous Zodiac crosshair logo and italic lettering for “Zodiac Sea Wolf” and “GMT Automatic” are printed in matte black. A date window also sits at 3 o’clock also bordered in black.
Powering the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT Neon watch is the Soprod C125 automatic movement. We don’t see many Soprod calibres these days, but they are a robust alternative to Sellita and ETA promising great reliability and nicely finished movements. The Soprod C125 beats at 4Hz, or 28,800 vibrations per hour, has a power reserve of 42 hours and is equipped with a 25 jewels. It also delivers a quickset 24-hour hand. To complete the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT Neon watch, a sporty three-link bracelet is promised with polished centre links and stepped detailing on the outer links.
