Why the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Automatic Ecru Dial is the Ultimate Daily Beater

Some seriously cool watches have come out of the Watches & Wonders 2021 event this year -many of them occupying the steel sports watch sector. Let’s agree – it’s no longer a niche corner of the industry. It has been done and done again – a hundred times over in fact. But those who are doing it well have everyone’s vote. Robust, stylish, powered by an automatic movement and fitted with an integrated bracelet – steel sports watches tick some pretty important boxes, and it is these features precisely that make a design like the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Automatic a watch that will be picked up and put on the wrist every single day of the week.

The popular Maurice Lacroix Aikon watch design is a reborn Calypso model from the 1990s. It is characterised predominantly for its six polished “arms” placed around the bezel and its stylish five-link bracelet. The first Aikon watch line was released in 2016 but the collection was revamped back in 2018 with a more refined version and this time powered by an automatic movement. The current Maurice Lacroix Aikon watch collection is pretty diverse, with a range of dial colours to choose from and two sizes – a 39mm and a 42mm. The sharp angles of its case shape enhance a sporty aesthetic whilst a mix of fine-brushed and polished finishes add dimension and detail to the exterior of the watch’s bold and dynamic style. Curved lines are also thrown into the mix. The case melds into the lugs and the bracelet also tapers down into the clasp. This enables the Aikon watch to look smaller than it really measures on the wrist. Chamfered polished edges combine with brushed sides, outlining the unusual shape of the case and providing a frame around a textured dial.

The new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Automatic 39mm watch with ecru dial

Designed for the ambitious modern-day man or woman, the new 39mm Maurice Lacroix Automatic watch is an affordable luxury watch that appeals to both genders. Intended to reflect the personality of its owner, Maurice Lacroix has put significant focus and efforts into differentiating the three-handed model with a date complication from the even sportier chronograph model. The layout of the dial is spacious and easy to read, with slim central hour and minute hands that have been treated with a generous layer of Super-LumiNova. The stick hour markers have also been treated with the same luminous material, with the 12, 6 and 9 o’clock locations represented by a double stick design. These elements sit against an ecru-coloured dial adorned with a sun-brushed Clous de Paris decoration. This effect, combined with the Aikon’s angular case subtly resembles the iconic sports watch look achieved by the likes of Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe during the 1970s.

The Aikon Automatic 39mm model from Maurice Lacroix is fitted with a date window dressed against a legible white background for enhanced readability, Alongside the Maurice Lacroix lettering and logo positioned just below the 12 o’clock location, the entire surface is protected underneath a pane of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. This incredibly strong material is integrated with anti-reflective treatment, enabling the time to be read off the dial whether under direct sunlight or artificial lighting. The sapphire glass top seals to a 200-meter water-resistant case crafted from stainless steel.

The new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Automatic watch is powered by a reliable self-winding movement. The automatic ML 115. Although not built in-house, delivers a value-for-money performance, with an impressive autonomy of 38 hours. It beats at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and comprises 26 jewels, offering central hours, minutes and seconds as well as a date function. The components of the movement are completed with snailing and circular-graining finishes as well as Cotes de Geneve decoration and perlage.

The Aikon watch is both a casual leisure watch but also one that combines effortlessly alongside more formal attire thanks to the watch’s stainless steel bracelet. A mix of fine-brushed and polished links complement the finishes on the case, tapering at the end and securing with a Maurice Lacroix-engraved folding buckle.

Overall, the 39mm Aikon watch with an unusual ecru dial is an all-round robust, reliable sports tool that ticks all the boxes when it comes to style and functionality. Although available in several different configurations (you can view those here), the subtle rose-tinted beige display of this luxury steel sports watch offers something dressy and understated all in one.
