The new DOXA SUB 300 Beta Sharkhunter watch
Tuesday - 29 August 2023
The ultimate dive tool for those who depend on reliability and performance now shows itself as a black ceramic and rose gold Beta Sharkhunter model, featuring a depth-in-feet and time-in-minutes scale on its slimmer bezel.
DOXA’s history is peppered with several popular dive watches, some of which have proven particularly popular over recent years. Earlier this year, we covered DOXA’s SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition watch - a direct descendant of the orange DOXA seen on Dirk Pitt’s wrist. It was made a part of the company’s current collection and although non-limited, it was specially numbered whilst introducing the new model in an aged and almost antique-like way, with all the specifications one would expect of the SUB 300T watch. The 42.5mm case of the Clive Cussler Edition is crafted from stainless steel and is integrated with 120-meter water resistance. A flat sapphire crystal glass top is one of the main differences between this watch compared to its ancestor. It is framed by a unidirectional rotating bezel with a 60-minute scale in black with a red outer scale and a toothed edge for an easy grip.
Both the DOXA SUB 300 AND 300T are inspired by earlier dive watches from the 1960s. You could be mistaken for thinking these two watches are the same, yet there are small differences in proportions and size that separate the two. Nevertheless they are both solid dive watch options, as is the new DOXA SUB 300 Beta Sharkhunter. Not for obvious reasons, the SUB 300 is often considered more the collectable, whilst the SUB 300T pays homage to the 1969 DOXA SUB 300T Conquistador in a modern way. It is less expensive yet offers more features for those serious about diving. Its sapphire crystal is more flush with the bezel as opposed to the boxed style sapphire, featured on the SUB 300. It also has a helium escape valve on the side of the watch and appears a little chunkier due to its thicker proportions.
The new DOXA SUB 300 Beta Sharkhunter defies dress codes with its bold. And powerful look. Its black ceramic case is adorned with an 18ct rose gold bezel and crown, promising a robust and versatile tool for wearing everyday. The added bonus of this watch is that during the day it constitutes a sleek and sporty persona, whilst at night it can convey a sense of elegance thanks to its golden touches. Chic enough for the oceans during the daytime or the bar at night, the model oozes unmistakable urban elegance thanks to its innovative blend of materials, textures and colours. The bezel has also been refined to promote further slimness.
The DOXA SUB concept
In 1967, DOXA revolutionised the dive watch industry by producing a tool that promised a water resistant capability of 300 meters. It was unprecedented at the time, setting benchmarks for its competitors. It was the first of its kind to offer a unidirectional rotating bezel for diver safety. In addition to this, it featured two separate scales on it bezel. These were developed in accordance with the science developed by the US Navy. The orange scale indicated the outer depth ring and the black inner scale indicated the minutes, patented by DOXA itself. The SUB 300 went on to equip the wrists of those who took part in the legendary missions of “The Undersea World of Jacques Costeau” and became a cult-like collectable, highlighted by its vivid orange dial designed for superior legibility underwater.
After the orange version came, the camo version arrived, nodding to the brand’s connections to the Swiss Army as well as the patina effect of the recent Clive Cussler Edition. With a new interplay of dark and light shades, brought together by luxurious materials, the new DOXA SUB 300 Beta Sharkhunter watch is a mixture of matte and glossy, shadowy and luminescent, fun and sleek, and stealthy and showy. The symbol within its name stands for “Beta” – beyond the conventional. Although sleeker in style, the original DNA of the SUB 300 is left intact for the modern-day enthusiast to enjoy. The watch is slimmer than the 300T, measuring a case depth of 11.95mm. Combined with a diameter of 42.5mm, the new DOXA SUB 300 Beta Sharkhunter brings together neat proportions and includes a titanium container inside the case that protects the movement.
A matte grained dial features black-on-black markings, enabling the crucial markings on the bezel to pop with confidence. Promising a functional and comfortable fit on the wrist, the new DOXA 300 Beta Sharkhunter watch secures with a supple black FKM rubber band, along with a black PVD coated clasp that features the DOXA logo on both sides. It also features a DOXA fish-adorned ratcheting wetsuit extension for wearing over the top of thick diving gear. The dive watch, with its screw-down crown at 3 o’clock in rose gold, holds a Swiss mechanical movement at its centre, chosen for its reliability and precision. The COSC certified chronometer operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve once fully wound of 38 hours.
Highlighted with plenty of Super-LumiNova material on the hands and hour markers for utilising the tool in dark conditions, the new DOXA SUB 300 Beta Sharkhunter is sure to be making its way into many wish lists this year.
