Sinn 105 St Sa UTC Watch Review
Tuesday - 29 December 2020
Part of the long list of watch releases launched by Sinn this year was the Sinn 105 St Sa UTC, a delightful second time zone watch with a sporty, no frills aesthetic characteristic of the German brand. It’s contemporary form and versatile functionality once again cements Sinn’s prowess for technical excellence, precision, and performance.
Celebrated predominantly for their German pilots watches, Sinn have evidently tried to step outside their comfort zone this year with some of their most remarkable novelties to date. From the 70’s inspired bullhead chronograph to a range of limited edition divers instruments, Sinn’s 2020 watch releases have delivered a modern take on their classic architecture while still upholding a familiar brand DNA. Similarly, the new Sinn 105 St Sa UTC watch collection expands their general sports line but with clean new aesthetic perfect for the modern-day gentleman looking for uncompromising style and functionality.
While many luxury watch manufacturers choose to name their second time zone watches with “GMT”, Sinn have taken a more precise appellation with the UTC reference. What’s the difference you ask? GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time and refers to a specific time zone while UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time. Rather than being a time zone, UTC is the basis for civil time and time zones worldwide. This careful choice of reference once again underlines Sinn’s obsession with precision and accuracy. The bezel can also be used to determine cardinal points when the sun is visible. To do this, you would simply point the 12-hour hand towards the sun and the 24 hour hand will be pointing north.
The UTC function is displayed on a bi-directional rotating bezel decorated with 24-hour ratcheting scale and a bright orange UTC hand. In typical Sinn fashion, the Sinn 105 St Sa UTC features no standard bezel but one that has been cured with their patented TEGIMENT hardening treatment, a technology famed for its increased scratch resistance and durability. The rotating bezel also has a captive connection to the bead-blasted case and is adorned with a black hard coating, a feature that allows it to stand out against the similar architecture of the Sinn 104 series.
Presented in stainless steel, the case of the Sinn 105 St Sa UTC watch measures to 41mm in diameter and promises a waterproof and pressure resistant rating of 200 metres. Sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on both sides protects the dial while a screw-fastened case back and screw in crown helps assist in meeting the technical requirements for water resistance as set out in German DIN 8310 standards. The case back also features a sapphire crystal glass insert with anti-reflective treatment on the interior for a delightful view of the automatic winding movement within.
The Sinn 105 St Sa UTC is currently available in two variations: the standard Sinn 105 St Sa UTC comes with a matte black dial while the Sinn 105 St Sa W UTC is presented with a white matte dial. The date window is also paired with the corresponding dial colour. Both variations promise peak legibility thanks to hour, minute and seconds hands and applied indexes coated in luminescent colour. Sporty orange accents found on the UTC hand and UTC text complement the aesthetic continue the easy-to-read design.
Piloting the Sinn 105 St Sa UTC watch is the Sellita SW330-1 automatic winding movement, a 25 jewelled calibre with a power reserve of 42 hours and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. As with all Sinn watches, the Côtes de Genève rotor is adorned with the brand’s logo and paired with handsome perlage decoration and blued screws, all viewable through the exhibition back. To complete the look of the Sinn UTC watch, there are several strap options to choose from including silicon, leather and metal bracelet.
