Seiko Astron GPS Solar 140th Anniversary Yozakura Limited Edition

In celebration of their 140th anniversary, Seiko have revealed a stunning series of limited edition timepieces inspired by the beauty of Japan’s landscapes. Part of the festivities was a limited edition trio of Seiko Presage Island Green watches designed to mirror the enchanting wilderness of Iriomote Island and a Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series watch reminiscent of the sunlight at dawn. Alongside this, a one-of-a-kind Seiko Astron GPS Solar 140th Anniversary Yozakura Limited Edition watch was unveiled inspired by the legendary Japanese cherry blossom tree.

Since 1881, Seiko have strived to “always be one step ahead of the rest” and it’s a philosophy they have remained dedicated to in all they have done since. From the very first wristwatch made in Japan in 1913 to their signature Grand Seiko release in 1960, Seiko have demonstrated its leadership in high precision, luxury watch manufacturer. In 2012, they launched the world’s first GPS solar watch with the Seiko Astron, a remarkable timekeeping innovation that allowed travellers and adventurers alike to access accurate timekeeping powered solely by light. At just a touch of a button, the Seiko Astron will adjust to any time zone on earth, all while never needing to have its battery replaced.

The Seiko Astron GPS Solar 140th Anniversary Yozakura Limited Edition under reference SSH083J1 boasts this very same technology within an all-new design inspired by the beauty of the Japanese cherry blossom tree. The word “Yozakura” derives from the name given to the fleeting yet beautiful flowers that when witnessed under a star-lit sky give an ethereal and magical glow to the space around them. This very image is brought to life through the jet-black case designed to act as the nights sky and the purple dial which echoes the glistening petals of the mysterious cherry blossom tree.

Measuring to 42.7mm in diameter and a neat 13.3mm thick, the case of the Seiko Astron GPS Solar 140th Anniversary Yozakura is handsomely engineered from black coated stainless steel treated with a special super hard coating, a treatment that ensures additional robustness and longevity of the jet-black sheen. The case is also equipped with a screw in crown, screw down case back with unique limited edition engraving and dual-curved sapphire crystal glass. The highly scratch resistant glass is cured with a super clear coating on the inner surface to provide optimal legibility of the time at a glance and to ensure the delicate colours of the dial can be enjoyed to the fullest.

Continuing to ensure impeccable legibility, the dial of the Seiko Astron GPS Solar 140th Anniversary SSH083J1 watch is decorated with sword-shaped Lumibrite hands and faceted indexes alongside a large date window between the 4 and 5 o’clock position. The gradient purple dial is also home to a day display at 3 o’clock, dual-time function, a perpetual calendar to February 28, 2100, a power reserve display, reception result display function,  satellite acquisition status display function, time transfer function and a world time function for presenting the time in 39 different time zones.

Each of these impressive complications are powered by the GPS Solar Caliber 5X53 Dual-Time movement, a remarkable solar powered watch calibre that requires only natural and artificial light to stay fuelled. It works by connecting up to twice a day to the GPS network to maintain its precision anywhere in the world. It will automatically adjust to Daylight Saving Time, and if you were to cross time zones during the day, you simply press a single button to move the independently driven hour, minute and seconds hand to the correct local time.
