Reviewing the IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Green Watch

Last year, IWC announced the completion of its Mark XX series with a striking sunburst green dial. It joins several recent green versions of popular IWC watches, including its Pilot’s Watch Chronograph, its Portugieser Chronograph, its Big Pilot’s Watch and its Perpetual Calendars for the Portugieser and Big Pilot’s designs. Today, we’re going to look at the sunburst green IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XX model – a simple and legible design that promises unwavering legibility whether worn in the cockpit or the office.
Last year, IWC Schaffhausen stealthily dropped the Pilot’s Watch XX into its current line. It didn’t go unnoticed by hardcore fans of the brand but was only released in two variants; a black dial and a blue dial. They both came fitted on leather straps that completed a very classic and instrumental look on the wrist, despite their simplicity. No more than 6 months after this quiet release, IWC announced it would be completing this chapter of the IWC Mark series with two stunning green dial variants. One would be offered on a stainless steel bracelet and the other would be offered on a traditional brown calf leather strap. The addition of these two green IWC watches completed the 6 options for the Mark XX series. They both maintained the spirit of the pilot’s watch as a tool for flying with a simple dial that promised legibility in all conditions.
With the addition of the Mark XX watches from IWC, we saw some very subtle tweaks to the Mark watch design. These could be appreciated in the extended indices and the relocation of the numerals, which had been moved inwards to create more room. The hour markers, hands and minute track, however, remained a clean white hue thanks to plenty of Super-LumiNova. The green Mark XX watch from IWC Schaffhausen also features a date window that is no longer colour-matched to the dial. This can be seen in the blue and black versions of the Mark XX watch also, as well as the sunburst green version. The white details, however, are plentiful across the dial and are forgiving of this detail.
The recent green IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XX model is crafted from stainless steel and measures a 40mm diameter. There are some minor tweaks here too. The lug-to-lug measurement of the Mark XX has been slightly shortened to 49.2mm, whilst the thickness of the case has been slimmed down from 11mm to 10.8mm. The entire surface of the case is now brushed apart from the bezel, which maintains a polished finish, as well as a polished chamfer on the lugs. The crown has been increased in size to improve ease of operation, along with an improved water resistance from 60 meters to 100 meters, opening up more options for wearing the watch daily.
Inside the green IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XX model, the modifications continue with an in-house movement that is also shared with its black and blue siblings. The automatic movement has an extended 120-hour power reserve, which outruns the original Sellita 35111 movement that powered the Mark XVIII watches. Here, the new Calibre 32111 boasts Cotes de Geneve and Perlage decoration and promises a performance of 28,800 vibrations per hour behind an engraved caseback. One last update to the recent green Mark XX watch by IWC is its strap and bracelet options. The EasX-CHANGE system integrated into the watch enables the strap or bracelet to connect easily to any compatible spring bars, transforming the look of the watch whenever required.
