Reviewing the Breitling Superocean Automatic Watches for 2022

Breitling has released a brand-new range of Superocean watches based on the style of the Slow Motion models of its past. Equipped with a reliable automatic movement and with a versatile range of dial colours and sizes to choose from, these new Breitling Superocean watches for 2022 bring a new twist to Breitling’s iconic luxury dive watch line.

The Superocean – a watch for beaches, boating and boardrooms

After decades of success in its conquests under the sea, the Superocean watch by Breitling is one of the Swiss watchmaker’s most highly recognised and collectable designs. Its story began back in 1957 when two versions of the Superocean watch were released: a time only model and a chronograph. Both captured the style of the nautical sports era perfectly. Subsequently, the Breitling Superocean watch has retained a very retro aesthetic ever since. Details that combine elegance with performance were met with a practical 200-meter water resistant capability for plenty of underwater exploration, whilst on dry land, these earlier Superocean watches could easily transform from a beach companion to a boardroom accessory. The same can still be said for the latest models to enter the Breitling Superocean collection. There are three materials to choose from, a range of dial colours to pick from and some useful modifications worth noting.

One particularly important Breitling Superocean watch from the manufacture’s history was the ref: 807, which used the main chronograph hand on the dial to indicate diving duration. The calibre developed to allow the Breitling dive watch to do this was named the “Slow Motion” and it allowed the chronograph hand to make one evolution around the dial over the course of an hour. A running indicator was also developed, which turned a yellow disc to let the wearer know when the chronograph hand was in action. Following in the same style as the Breitling Superocean Slow Motion watch, the Swiss watchmaker has released a slew of new models that look incredibly eye-catching on the wrist. A few first things to note about the new releases; all models have a distinctive handset, they all feature a slim ceramic bezel inlay and their rubber straps and stainless steel bracelets come fitted with a new folding clasp accompanied by a micro adjustment mechanism.

The new Breitling Superocean watches are all automatic. They come in four sizes of 36mm, 42mm, 44mm, and 46mm. One model is a limited edition version of just 1000 pieces named the Breitling Superocean Kelly Slater Limited Edition watch, whilst the largest size of the crop – the 46mm model – offers a patented bezel lock.

Product overview of the new Breitling Superocean watches for 2022

The 46mm models belonging to the newest batch of Breitling Superocean watches are the largest of the entire range and come in two variations; a blue dial with a matching deep blue rubber strap and a black dial version with a matching black rubber strap. As mentioned, these bands have a newly developed folding clasp that enables for a more comfortable fit against the wrist thanks to a micro-adjustment system that can easily attach over the top of a dive suit when needed. These models are made from stainless steel and feature the aforementioned patented bezel lock located on the left side of the watch.

The next size down comes in a choice of four colours and have also been developed from Breitling’s 316L stainless steel. The blue and black models are identical to their larger counterparts, whilst a turquoise dial on a black rubber strap and a deep green dial option on a matching green-coloured strap add a little more variety to the line-up. Like the rest of the models in the collection, the 60-minute track around the periphery of the dial is highlighted in a lighter colour. Subtle red accent are seen in the lollipop-stye second hand on all of the models – red for the blue and black models, a soft orange accent for the green model and black for the vibrant turquoise coloured dial.

The Breitling Superocean Automatic Bronze watches are particular striking and come in two different sizes. The larger of the two is the Breitling Superocean Automatic Bronze 44, which comes in a stunning chocolate brown dial colour and a contrasting black polished ceramic bezel. Throughout the collection of new Superocean watches. Breitling uses black ceramic bezel inserts for the black, turquoise and brown dial models, a deep green to coordinate with the green dial models, and a matching deep blue to compliment the range’s blue dial models. The Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 Bronze watch is particularly striking, exuding a vintage-inspired aesthetic thanks to additional bronze-coloured hands and hour markers that shimmer beautifully under the light.

For the 42mm sizes, the Breitling Superocean Automatic 42 iterations once again underpin their classic diving style with a black, blue and silver dial option. The silver option is surrounded by a blue ceramic insert to compliment the watch’s additional blue dial elements and rubber strap. All of the new Breitling Superocean watches for 2022 follow form with a square-shaped tip on the minute hand, lashings of Super-LumiNova on the hands and hour markers, and the distinctive Breitling “B” motif positioned just underneath the 12 o’clock location.

Also available in the 42mm size is a steel and 18ct rose gold case option with a black dial and rose gold-coloured accents. As with all models (bar the 46mm options) the bezels are unidirectional rotating for the effortless measuring of elapsed time underwater. The caseback of each new release is screwed down and unadorned for an understated finish to each design. This particular model, with a stainless steel case and 18ct rose gold bezel and crown, imparts a luxurious style that will match, no doubt, with plenty of office attire, as well as something more relaxed at the weekend.

Smaller than the other bronze version and ideal for those who love the style of a vintage bronze diving watch but need something more compact for their wrist, the Breitling Superocean Automatic 42 Bronze watch has a captivating olive green dial, penetrated by eye-catching bronze-coloured hands and hour markers and a striking bronze-coloured minute track. As with all other models in the new collection, the Superocean watch is water resistant to 300 meters and is powered by the Calibre 17, based on the ETA 2824-2. It produces a 38-hour power reserve once fully wound and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The new 42mm green and bronze watch from the Superocean collection is fitted on a deep green rubber strap with the new and improved folding clasp mechanism.

Next up is the Breitling Superocean Automatic 42 Kelly Slater Limited Edition watch – a nod to the surfing legend who is also co-founder of Outerknown – the sustainable apparel manufacturer of which Breitling nurtures a successful partnership with. The dramatic style of this new Breitling Superocean Automatic 42 Kelly Slater watch creates a powerful link to our oceans and makes a statement with its vibrant orange dial and contrasting deep green rubber strap.

The Breitling Superocean Automatic 36 are notably fresh and perfect for females who like to surf, dive or take part in water sports whilst out enjoying life on the water’s edge. The cool blue tones of the aquamarine dial option differ to the larger men’s version, with a matching silver-coloured bezel and a vibrant turquoise-coloured rubber strap. These lighter accents are repeated in the form of the 36mm orange dial version and the silver version – both of which mirror the same silver-coloured bezel, hour markers, hands and minute track. The orange Breitling Superocean Automatic 36mm model secures to the wrist with an equally vibrant orange-coloured rubber strap, whilst the silver version retains a clean, fresh look on the wrist thanks to its white rubber strap.
