Reviewing the Breitling Super Chronomat Automatic 38 Diamond Watches
Monday - 02 January 2023
For the first time, Breitling has introduced a diamond-set bezel to the Super Chronomat family. A spellbinding ice blue and entrancing mint green dial colour now belongs to the series, complete with matching coloured ceramic rider tabs and crowns that are abundant in style and character.
Rather than simply upscaling the already existing Chronomat watch, Breitling tooled the Super Chronomat watch up to be more aggressive and more monolithic. It did away with the coin edge ridge seen on the crown and instead supplemented it with a heavily grooved surface for an easy grip. The brand also created more durable push pieces. whilst its elegantly thin polished chamfers ran the length of the case, remaining intact. For women, the diamond-studded bezels were only available in the Chronomat series, fitted with tungsten carbide bezels that proved incredibly sturdy. Mother-of-pearl dials were a popular option in this sub-category. Their smooth glossy bezels and scintillating precious stones suggest a very luxurious and indulgent design for those with a preference for chic styles. Now, Breitling introduces a diamond-decorated bezel for the women’s Super Chronomat watch category. The 38mm models are crafted from stainless steel or steel and 18ct rose gold, and feature matching-coloured ceramic rider tabs on the bezel to complete their feminine, eye-catching aesthetics. Powered by an automatic movement and offered in an Ice Blue or Mint Green colour, the dials of these new Breitling Super Chronomat Automatic 38 watches for 2022 epitomize elegance and femininity. Let's take a look at the details for each watch…
The dials
Offered in Mint Green or Ice Blue, the dials of the new Breitling Super Chronomat Automatic 38 diamond watches are brought to life by silver or rose gold-coloured appliques. The mint green model features alluring 18ct rose gold central hour, minute and second hands that interact beautifully with a matching stainless steel and 18ct rose gold bi-colour case and bracelet. The bezel is set in 18ct rose gold and showered in glistening round brilliant-cut lab-grown diamonds that add a halo of light around the subtle pearly green tones of the display. Ceramic-filled rider tabs at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock complete the perimeter of this new dial, equipped with a date window at 6 o’clock. The rider tabs seen running through the designs of the Breitling Chronomat watch series are interchangeable, enabling you to swap the 15 and 45-minute tabs over depending on whether you require a count-up or count-down feature.
The same layout is repeated on the Ice Blue version of the new Breitling Super Chronomat 38 Diamond watches, albeit with silver-coloured baton hour markers and central hands to match the model’s all-steel case. Green and blue ceramic elements also enrobe the onion-shaped crown seen in both versions of the green and blue ladies' Breitling watches respectively. A tone-on-tone minute scale borders the dial of each watch, whilst the hands and baton indexes have been treated with luminous material to assist with clear timekeeping in the night.
The case
The robust case of the new Breitling Super Chronomat Automatic 38 watches for 2022 are crafted from stainless steel. The mint green model boasts a luxurious 18ct rose gold bezel set with round brilliant-cut diamonds, whilst the blue dial version is crafted entirely from stainless steel. Both versions come fitted on a metal bracelet (stainless steel and 18ct rose gold for the mint green bi-colour option), or a Rouleaux-style rubber strap option in either blue or green, giving the model a sportier feel. Lastly, the watch can also be purchased on a deep green or blue alligator leather strap depending on the respective green or blue model. These bands all secure to the wrist with a Breitling-engraved folding clasp. Similar to the Chronomat Automatic GMT 40 watches that have been released simultaneously alongside these new models, the Super Chronomat Automatic38 watches features a plain screwed-in stainless steel caseback with plenty of space for a special engraving. The top of each model is fitted with a scratch-resistant and anti-reflective pane of sapphire crystal glass and each model is integrated with an impressive 200-meter water resistance.
The movement
Under the hood of the new Breitling Super Chronomat 38 diamond watch for 2022 is one of the most robust mechanical movements to feature throughout the company’s catalogue. The Breitling Calibre 17 is based on the ETA 2824-2 and features a quick set date complication that enables you to set the date function without affecting the time. Assembled and tuned by Breitling’s Chronométrie in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the Breitling Calibre 17’s main springs, balance wheel, escapement, fine micrometer regulator assembly, and shock deflectors are all tested thoroughly and COSC-certified. Operating at a cadence of 28.800 vibrations per hour, the automatic movement is quietly operating, comprises 25 jewels and offers a power reserve of 45 hours.
