Reviewing the 2022 Maurice Lacroix Aikon #Tide Watches
Saturday - 21 January 2023
Never denying its ambition to become an industry icon, the Maurice Lacroix Aikon watch collection has become a playground for bold and daring designs. Most recently, the Aikon #Tide has been a vessel for carrying a new recreation of the sporty chic watch, giving it a whole new twist. Crafted from ocean-bound upcycled plastic combined with glass fibre, the Maurice Lacroix Aikon #Tide watch is an environmentally aware watch that will appeal to devoted Aikon watch collectors as well as those looking for a sustainable watch. The most recent additions to the Aikon #Tide watch collection are five bold designs on black rubber bands in yellow, orange, blue, green and black and five additional versions on white rubber straps in green, light pink, blue, dark pink, and deep blue.
The Aikon watch
For many of us, an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch and a Patek Philippe Nautilus watch are but a pipe dream. That’s not such a bad thing though, because for a more affordable price, you can purchase a sustainable wristwatch from Maurice Lacroix’s Aikon watch collection. The Aikon #Tide watch collection is crafted from a material that is twice as hard as standard plastic and five times more resistant. That said, it still carries all the much-loved design characteristics of the popular Aikon watch collection. The watch originates from the Calypso watch collection, which was brought back to the drawing board in 2016. Once redesigned it was released under the Aikon name and became home to a line of three-handed models and chronograph complications – all of which featured six polished rider tabs on the bezel and an integrated bracelet.
Some of the models from the Aikon watch collection by Maurice Lacroix boast elegant sun-brushed dials whilst others feature Clous de Paris engraving. The men’s range of Aikon watches offers sizes of 42mm to 45mm and the women’s options are offered in 30mm to 35mm options and can be found in mother-of-pearl dial options. The unisex Aikon watch is a 39mm size. Suffice to say there is an Aikon watch for every individual, even more so now that the collection has branched off into a vibrant, energising and unisex Aikon #Tide series.
The new Maurice Lacroix Aikon #Tide watches
The new Maurice Lacroix Aikon #Tide watches bring something new to the forefront of the Aikon design. Their dials are adorned with the ‘Vague du Jura’ that makes a reference to the ocean with its wave-like finish. It’s also crafted from a unique composite material crafted from a mix of ocean-bound upcycled plastic and glass fibre. The result is a case that promises five times more resistance than standard plastic, twice the hardness, and a carbon footprint that is six times less than PET. It takes a total of 17 plastic bottles to create the case and additional elements of one whole Maurice Lacroix Aikon #Tide watch. This includes the bezel, the caseback, the case, the crown and the end-piece and buckle of each new model.
Each of the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon #Tide watches are endowed with a vibrant hue. There are five models fitted on a sporty black rubber strap that feature a yellow, orange, blue, green and black case. These versions are paired with a dial in the same matching colour. The other versions equipped with a clean and contemporary white rubber band feature the same colour-matched case and dial in green, light pink, dark pink and light blue. The dark blue version is the only one with a contrasting white dial.
All of the models belonging to this slew of new Aikon #Tide watches are powered by a Swiss-made quartz movement and all are equipped with a 100-meter water-resistant capability. All of the models also measure a compact 40mm diameter. The bolder colour options feature a black trim around their central hands and stick hour markers, whilst the white rubber strap options feature silver-coloured hands and stick hour markers made of scintillating diamonds. The navy blue watch on the white rubber band, however, foregoes the addition of the diamonds, making it a great option for the male wrist. That said, the vibrant yellow and black rubber configuration is equally as appealing to females, constituting a diverse collection of unisex offerings to be enjoyed by all.
A flat sapphire crystal glass front sits atop each of these new Aikon #Tide watches, augmenting readability. To enhance this, the hour markers and hands on the dial have also been treated with a generous amount of Super-LumiNova to assist with timekeeping in the dark. A screw-down crown together with a screwed-in caseback help to uphold the watch’s water-resistant capability, whilst an Easy Strap Exchange system allows you to swap the watch as and whenever you like with no fuss or tools required. What’s more, the Swiss-made quartz movement that sits at the heart of this watch is backed by a 5-year warranty to solidify its accuracy and reliability.
Buying an Aikon #Tide watch from Maurice Lacroix goes far deeper than purchasing an eye-catching and functional sports watch. The partnership between the luxury watch manufacturer and #Tide plays a key role in cleaning up the oceans. The key message behind this specialist in ‘upcycling ocean-bound plastic waste’ is clearly portrayed in each model, putting a positive step towards environmentally friendly and sustainable timekeeping.
