Raymond Weil Freelancer Jimi Hendrix Limited Edition Watch Review
Thursday - 07 November 2019
Synonymous with the artistry and talents of the music industry, Raymond Weil are back again with a brand new musical collaboration. This time around they are celebrating one of America’s greatest rock musicians, Jimi Hendrix with the Raymond Weil Freelancer Jimi Hendrix Limited Edition watch. Despite only having a short mainstream career of only four years, he remains one of the most influential guitarists in history and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. Raymond Weil have done a fantastic job of honouring his free spirited attitude with a design inspired by his timeless Woodstock performance.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock festival when Jimi Hendrix performed one of the most pivotal live music events in history along with his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. This iconic set has largely influenced the design of the Raymond Weil Freelancer Jimi Hendrix Limited Edition watch including the geometric pattern surrounding the day and date window at 3 o clock which cleverly replicates the decoration on his guitar strap. His famous 1968 white Fender Stratocaster guitar has also inspired many of the dial’s details including the ten dotted indexes around the edge that mimic the humbuckers on his guitar neck and the circular border which represents the six guitar strings.
“With this latest addition to our Music Icons series, we at RAYMOND WEIL are thrilled to join forces with Authentic Hendrix to honour the world’s greatest guitarist. Music has always inspired our brand and sets an upbeat rhythm for all our new releases.” Elie Bernheim - CEO, Raymond Weil
Jimi Hendrix was renowned for many things, one of these being his ability to play his guitar backwards. This talent is featured beautifully on the central chronograph second-hand counterweight in the shape of a guitar head turned back to front. The tachymeter scale found on the outskirts of the Raymond Weil Freelancer Jimi Hendrix watch is also detailed with the singer’s famous quote “Music is my Religion” decorated in a bold blue colour and his name in contrasting white. On the case back, we are also treated to a stunning decoration of the Authentic Hendrix logo, giving his estate’s seal of approval. Jimi’s sister, Janie Hendrix, has also signed the certificate of authenticity that comes in the unique packaging to demonstrate its limited edition status out of 500 pieces. The packaging is incredible and features a funky tie-dye interior that can be shown off when you display the watch.
The Raymond Weil Jimi Hendrix Limited Edition is part of the brand’s Freelancer collection, so we are treated to the iconic case design crafted from stainless steel with a matte finish grey PDV coating. The case measures to 42mm in size and is fitted with a screw down crown detailed with the RJ logo and high quality scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Below the glass is the gorgeous dial decorated with an array of Jimi Hendrix trademarks including striking blue accents to replicate the outfit worn by him on the day of the Woodstocks festival. The dial is also adorned with sleek hour and minute hands coated in white Superluminova.
Powering each of the functions on the dial is the RW5200 automatic winding movement, a Swiss made calibre which provides central hands for hour, minutes and seconds, central chronograph seconds, a day and date window at 3 o clock and three subsidiary dials for continuous seconds, 30 minutes counter and 12 hours counter. The mechanical movement also boasts an impressive power reserve of 48 hours and can be seen through the sapphire crystal case back behind the decoration of Jimi Hendrix.
The Raymond Weil Jimi Hendrix Limited Edition watch is a must have for fans of the iconic musician as well as lovers of stunning mechanical timepieces. With only 500 pieces of the timepiece being released, we highly recommend placing an order for one as soon as possible.
