Presenting the U-Boat Capsoil Darkmoon Limited Edition watches
Tuesday - 13 September 2022
The new vibrant range of Capsoil Darkmoon watches from U-Boat are presented in orange, yellow and blue and are each limited to just 50 pieces worldwide. Their oil-filled cases feature a floating bubble across the dial present time with the signature U-Boat numerals and hands and come fitted on a matching coloured rubber band
U-Boat watches are all about standing out from the crowd, with their unique styles that are designed for enjoying the most special moments in life. The Italian watchmaker launched the concept of the U-Boat Capsoil watch collection back in 2018, followed by the Darkmoon models and has this to say about the range; “From pure reporter of time to motor of the future, this is the heart of the new Capsoil model”.
The watches from this innovative line are characterised by an electro-mechanical movement completely immersed in an oil bath. The second iteration following the first Capsoil watch release was the Darkmoon model, which took on a more minimalist approach and offered a more affordable price tag. The oil-filled dial appeared a deep black colour and this enhanced the presence of the hands and other features on the dial. U-Boat further added; “CAPSOIL goes beyond the boundaries of traditional design, combining innovative features with retro-style lines. The oily liquid flows into the dial making it an absolute and deep black that surprisingly amplifies the view of the hands that seem to flow free as in the absence of the glass.”
Some U-Boat fans have expressed disappointment in the past that the Capsoil was indeed powered by a quartz movement as opposed to a mechanical one. Earlier versions featured an open caseback showing this, yet it seems the Italian brand has listened carefully to its consumers. Newer models went without the running seconds hands to disguise the quartz “feel” of the watch and the brand closed the back of the case up. Despite the success of the former Capsoil Darkmoon watches, there is still plenty of mystery surrounding the new U-Boat Capsoil limited edition models for 2022, since there is very little information on each piece. The inspiration behind each timepiece remains the same, however. The U-Boat Capsoil Darkmoon limited edition watches for 2022 are inspired by the dark side of the moon but this time are presented in a vibrant and exciting trio of colours; orange, blue and yellow.
When it comes to oil-filled watches, it makes sense to equip the U-Boat Capsoil Darkmoon watch with a quartz movement since mechanical movements cannot operate when fully submerged in oil. In previous years, other oil-filled mechanical watches overcome this problem with a dual chamber case, which saw the oil injected into the upper half of the case only, and air injected into the bottom of the case where the movement operated. Intentionally designed with a bubble of air left inside the case, the new U-Boat Capsoil Darkmoon limited edition watches provide a fascinating take on timekeeping. The bubble floats effortlessly around the dial underneath a pane of sapphire crystal glass, interacting beautifully with a very slim bezel. Each time the bubble appears over an integral part of the dial, it enlarges the markings creating a cyclops date effect. The rest of the dial features the iconic “U” in black at 12 o’clock, together with an Arabic numeral at 4 and 8 o’clock, and stick markers for the rest of the locations.
Each of the orange, yellow and blue dial versions of the new U-Boat Capsoil Darkmoon watches for 2022 measure a diameter of 44mm and feature a case crafted from stainless steel. Each model is also exclusive to 50 pieces worldwide and comes fitted on a rubber band embossed with the large U-Boat print and a ridged effect on the inner side of the band. The back of the case reveals lots of lettering. The “Steel 316L” lettering joins the large “U-Boat” print along with the watch’s reference number on the left-hand side of the case. Across the other side of the case are the “Full Liquid Inside” lettering and the “DarkMoon” reference in large print.
Each of the orange, yellow and blue U-Boat Capsoil Darkmoon watches come on matching coloured rubber bands with a traditional stainless steel pin buckle-style fastening.
