Parmigiani Tonda Unveils the GT Bi Colour Dial

The new Tonda GT watches from Parmigiani Fleurier feature silver dials with two complications – a black-filled big date and a small second counter. Available on an integrated bracelet or vulcanised black rubber strap, these casual, sporty and elegant watches are perfect for wearing from Monday through Sunday.

Got a soft spot for casual wristwatches? The Tonda GT is indisputably the most relaxed style that Parmigiani Fleurier offers. Earlier in 2020, the brand released both a Tonda GT and Tondagraph GT model. These leisure watches were available on an integrated bracelet or a rubber strap option. The Tonda GT was offered in steel with a black dial ref: PFC910-0000210-X01482 and in gold with a blue dial ref: PFC910-1500340-B00782. The key characteristics of the watch included a grand date feature positioned underneath the 12 o’clock location and a small second sub-dial balancing things out at 6 o’clock. The case of the Tonda GT was designed with the help of Dino Modolo, pepping things up a little and cleverly balancing it somewhere between a sports watch and a dress watch. Dino Modolo had previously worked with the likes of Corum, Vacheron Constantin, Gucci and Bedat & Co. The Tonda collection originally launched in 2011 yet engaging with the independent designer marked the first time that the brand had ever collaborated with an outside influence.

The new Parmigiani Tonda GT Bi-Colour watch takes this same form. The case, originally re-invigorated by Modolo measures a 42mm size, taking inspiration from 2016’s award-winning Tonda Chronor chronograph. The model is offered in a stainless steel variant and a more luxurious 18ct rose gold iteration – the same as the new Tondagraph GT models released earlier this year. Echoing the earlier Tonda GT watches released last year, these two new models are equipped with the same two complications and come in the same case materials but with new dial colours.

The dials

The new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda GT watches both measure 42mm in diameter and come in a stainless steel and 18ct rose gold version. The silver dials of both versions are executed in the “clou triangulaire” guilloché engraving – a pattern that is also echoed in the surface of the black rubber strap options. Each display is home to a black-filled small second sub-counter at 6 o’clock and a matching black-filled grand date function underneath the 12 o’clock location. The skeletonized and delta-shaped hands along with the indexes have been hand-applied and are finished in a rose gold hue or a rhodium plating to match the materials of their respective cases. The location of the grand date sees the Parmigiani Fleurier lettering shifted over to the 3 o’clock location, creating an appealing asymmetrical layout.

The cases:

There are polished and satin-brushed accents to admire across the surface of the Tonda GT case. The distinctive fluted bezel is also a stand-out feature for each of the four new iterations. This feature has been carried throughout the Tonda GT range and features in those earlier 2020 models. The case is equipped with a screw-down crown and topped with a scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass front. The back of the case is also fitted with the same strong glass, offering an exclusive view of the performance of the movement sat within. The Tonda GT bi-colour watches are also 100-meter water-resistant and come with an integrated bracelet or a black rubber strap and a folding buckle to match the finish of the case. The knurled bezel is a clear nod to the Toric watch developed by Michel Parmigiani’s 1999 brand, which took influence from his golden ratio design ethos.

If you choose the integrated bracelet option, you’ll experience first-hand how each individual link has been cleverly developed to promote comfort against the wrist. The proportions of the smaller brushed segments and larger polished links lead on from the recognisable teardrop lugs, with end links that are impressively finished, rounding off the design of the bracelet nicely. The double folding clasp is also nicely executed and has been engraved with the brand lettering. If you’re opting for the black rubber strap – this donates even more casual undertones to the design, making these options easy to pair with less formal attire at the weekend.

The movement;

The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda GT bi-colour watches are powered by the Manufacture Calibre PF044 -a self-winding movement that boasts Cotes de Geneve stripes and perlage decoration through the lens of the watch’s transparent caseback. The finely finished engine, capable of producing a 45-hour power reserve, also puts on show a 22ct gold skeletonised oscillating weight with sand-blasted and satin-finished techniques. The automatic big date movement beats at a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour and comprises 33 jewels.
