Parmigiani Fleurier Unveils New Tonda PF Micro Rotor Platinum Watch
Friday - 21 April 2023
The new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Micro Rotor watch was released at this year’s 2023 Watches & Wonders event and is the brand’s first timepiece to be crafted with a platinum case, bezel, bracelet and dial.
It is thought that around 10 tonnes of ore are needed to produce just 30 grams of platinum. This special material that is non-magnetic and resistant to corrosion is also resistant to abrasion and tarnishing and is becoming one of Parmigiani Fleurier’s signature design features. Used in this year’s Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante, the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante watch and a series of three box sets containing platinum calendar models – this material plays an integral role in Parmigiani Fleurier’s 2023 catalogue and also features in this beautiful PF Micro Rotor watch from the Tonda collection. It marks the first time the brand has created an all-platinum case, bezel, bracelet, dial and weight design.
The white, shiny lustre of a platinum case is by far one of the most alluring aspects of this watch, adding a refined and extra luxurious feel to its design. Parmigiani Fleurier has chosen this material since it epitomizes elegance and undeniable charisma. It attracts the light and charms it into elevating all the beautifully curved and polished finishes of the case, let alone its ideal proportions and thin unimposing bezel. Refined minimalism and discretion have always been at the forefront of the Tonda PF since the birth of the collection in 2021. The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Micro Rotor watch has already been done with a stainless steel case and a platinum bezel, as well as an 18ct rose gold version. Now the all-platinum variation is driven by an incredibly thin movement that enables the watch case to sit discreetly on the wrist at a discreet height whilst the dial remains simple and unfussy.
The Calibre PF703
The Calibre PF703 is a self-winding movement made in-house at Parmigiani Fleurier. It features a micro rotor crafted from platinum and measures a pleasing thickness of just 3mm. It also comprises 29 jewels and performs at a rhythm of 21, 600 vibrations per hour whilst producing a total power reserve of 48 hours once fully wound. The movement is finished with beautiful Cotes de Geneve decoration and Perlage. It also features Grain d-Orge guilloche decoration on its 950 platinum oscillating weight. Different to a traditional rotor, experts at Parmigiani Fleurier equip the new Tonda PF Micro Rotor Platinum watch with a small oscillating weight that is integrated into the movement. This reduction in thickness means that the entire case need only measure a thickness of 7.8mm. The majority of the finishes in the movement are carried out by hand at the brand’s watchmaking facilities, adding to the allure of this specially crafted watch.
Depicting watchmaking classicism at its finest, the dial of the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Micro Rotor Platinum watch instils a sense of simplicity across its lustrous surface. The sandblasted platinum dial is home to a set of simple central hour and minute hands that are hollowed out in the middle in true PF style. In addition to this, the watch also features the relatively new PF logo, rhodium-plated appliques and 18ct gold hands that have been rhodium-coated. The dial also features a legible date window at 6 o’clock. These elements on the dial are all protected by a piece of scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass and are framed by a knurled bezel to match the easy grip design of the crown at 3 o’clock.
To finish the refined and elegant style of the ultra-thin Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Micro Rotor, the watch is fitted on a 950 platinum bracelet with polished and satin-finished links that enclose on the underside of the wrist with an 18ct white gold folding clasp.
