A view of planet Earth – the new Bell and Ross BR 03 Astro captures the Earth from the ISS across an unconventional blue aventurine dial
A watch inspired by space is no new thing. Micro brands have been dabbling in all manner of playful, vibrant oddities for the past few years, and we’ve even seen hard hitters have a go, too. Some manufacturers have used abstract metal dials to echo the surface of forbidden planets. At the same time, aventurine and other similar materials play into the obscurities of the stone dial, capturing our star-lit universe in different ways. And that’s not even including watches purposely designed for space missions. Indeed, horology and space are inextricably linked. One brand that wants to capture a different angle from space is aviation watch specialist Bell & Ross, who has inspired their latest release - the BR 03 Astro - on the view of planet Earth from the window of a spacecraft. Meet the unconventional (but equally captivating) Bell & Ross BR 03 Astro Limited Edition watch, now available and ready to discover at Jura Watches.
It's not the first time Bell & Ross has referenced space. One of the brand’s first releases was the Space 1 watch ( followed by models 2 and 3). If you didn’t already know, these models drew from the expertise of German watchmaker Sinn, who manufactured some of Bell & Ross’s earlier models and supplied the components to them. The release of the Space models marked the brand’s transition towards its own independence, however, making way for more iconic designs like the square-shaped BR 01 and BR 03.
The Astro Showcases a Mesmerising Depiction of Earth In Relief
The latter forms the architecture of this latest release, the BR 03 Astro, complete with a black ceramic case integrated with 100 meters of water resistance and, even more interestingly, featuring a curved sapphire crystal glass top with a spherical cap at the centre. Through this hollowed-out cap, you get a glimpse of our mesmerising Earth in relief. Recessed into the sapphire, the shades and textures of our planet afford a realistic take on our world, while the rest of the dial features an unconventional layout, familiar to what we have seen the brand do in the past with models like the Red Radar. This time, instead of the wearer reading the time through a red-tinted sapphire glass and tracking aircraft that move on rotating rings, the BR 03 Astro showcases a mysterious Mars hand, which provides the hours. The transparent plate is joined by a laser-engraved moon indicator for the minutes and a satellite that depicts the running seconds.
A Limited Edition of Just 999 Pieces
Inspired by the dome of the ISS (the International Space Station), this unique and playful take on space captures the darkness and vastness of our universe as we know it, with an in-keeping military-type black ceramic case measuring 41mm diameter, echoing the elements of the BR 03 range. Cleverly, the weight of these dial components has all been carefully considered and measured to precise specifications, enabling each element to move synergistically alongside the other for a captivating show. The Earth and moving parts are placed upon a blue aventurine dial, whilst underneath the display, the Calibre BR.CAL-327 performs.
This self-winding engine is capable of producing a power reserve of 54 hours and is based on a tried and tested Sellita movement. It sits inside a micro-blasted black ceramic case that attaches to a black rubber or black synthetic strap, securing with a black-coated stainless steel pin buckle to remain in character with the rest of the stealthy design. As this is a limited edition watch, there are just 999 pieces released for avid Bell & Ross fans to snap up.
