Oris Launches the new Aquis Date Calibre 400 41.5mm

For the first time, Oris’ fully homegrown Calibre 400 is equipped into the heart of a smaller 41.5mm-sized Oris Aquis Date watch and clad in three new stunning dial and bezel colours.

I applaud Oris watches on so many levels. When the manufacturer vows to do something – it certainly sticks to its promise. Over forty years ago, Oris promised never to go back to producing any form of quartz watch. It delivered on that promise and as a result has produced many an affordably-priced, quality-built mechanical wristwatch. None more aquatically sophisticated than the Oris Aquis, which last year was endowed with one of the brand’s in-house movements – the Calibre 400, and boy has this movement really come into its own. Oris has been busy outfitting many of its most popular models with this mechanical movement. A few weeks ago, we covered the Oris Aquis ProDate Calibre 400 watch – specifically geared towards the needs of saturation divers. Before that – the Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 launched back in 2020 in its former 43.5 mm-sized case.

Today, we are showing the newest release from the Oris Aquis line – a smaller sized Oris Aquis Date watch, powered by that same proprietary movement but bearing a 41.5mm diameter. Let’s shake wrists with the new Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 41.5mm series. The luxury diver watches come in a trio of eye-catching colours. There’s the blue variation ref: 400 7769 4135, the green ref: 400 7769 4157 and the anthracite ref: 400 7769 4154.

Watch it work

When you’re proud of something – you want to show it off. Oris is proud of its in-house Calibre 400, which powers the new Oris Aquis Date watch. The company showcases its performance through the back of a sapphire-equipped case bottom. Not because it has to. Because the company believes that part of the joy of owning one of its mechanical wristwatch’s (hallmarked by that stunning red rotor) is all to do with the privilege of being able to watch it tick away effortlessly. To see it is to believe it. Hours and hours of painstaking craftsmanship has gone into the production of this beating heart. Why on earth would anyone cover such an achievement up? Oris now joins an elite group of Swiss watchmakers who can lay claim to forging their own mechanical movement from scratch and what’s more – the brand does it in a very affordable way.

Over the last 8 years, Oris has developed a total of nine new calibres. The Calibre 400, however, took a total of 5 years to develop, demonstrating the level of expertise behind the movement. The engine is entirely conceptualised by Oris specialists. A 10-year warranty reflects the brand’s confidence in this movement, which, under no circumstances will lag, thanks to its guaranteed accuracy of -3 to +5 seconds per day. It also features twin barrels enabling the movement to deliver a 5-day power reserve. To help it do this, each barrel houses an extended mainspring that can produce two and a half days of power. In addition to this, the movement comprises no less than 30 non-ferrous and anti-magnetic components such as a silicon escape wheel and a silicon anchor. As a result, the Calibre 400 deviates three times less than the expected amount when subject to 11 times the force that standard anti-magnetic watches are subject to.

The new Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 41.5mm watches

The three new models - housed in a smaller 41.5mm stainless steel case and sporting an anthracite, green and blue dial - bear the unmistakable Aquis DNA. If you’re a certified Aquis watch enthusiast and have several of these dive watches in your collection to prove it, you’re going to be happy to read that the models still beat those distinct pill-shaped hour markers treated with Super-LumiNova, together with chunky central hour and minute hands and a lollipop second hand. The date window is still pretty discreet at 6 o’clock, balanced by the less-discreet Oris lettering at 12 o’clock. Surrounding the dial is a unidirectional rotating bezel in a colour to match that of the watch’s respective dial colour. The ceramic insert features a legible 60-minute dive scale, enabling you to align the Aquis’ minute hand with the zero point on the bezel to keep track of your remaining dive time without any fuss.

The front of the new 300-meter water-resistant Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 41.5mm models are domed and crafted from anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass – the same material chosen to reveal the mechanical movement through the reverse side of the case. The back of the multi-piece stainless steel case is also screwed down and the screw-in crown at 3 o’clock is shielded by a crown protection mechanism. The models are also completed on a stainless steel bracelet with links executed in a mix of brushed and polished finishes. If the sporty look is what takes your fancy the most, however, the new Oris Aquis watches are also available on a black Oris-embossed rubber strap. Both options secure to the wrist with a security folding clasp and a diver’s extension facility for wearing atop a wetsuit. The watches are also integrated with Oris’ Quick Strap Change technology, enabling you to change the band as and when you desire.
