Oris Aquis Date 41.5mm Cherry Red Watch Review

A new ready-to-dive Oris Aquis Date watch has received a vibrant cherry-red coloured dial and sits on the wrist with a universally appealing 41.5mm case diameter.

With modern utilitarian looks and a robust design, the Oris Aquis watch has proven its worth as a rugged diving instrument thousands of times over since it arrived in 2011. What’s more, its no-nonsense design can easily be utilised as a daily beater on dry land too. The Oris Aquis watch drew upon a fundamental design created back in the late nineties known as the Oris Full Steel back then. In 2018 the large 43.5mm case of the Oris Aquis was downsized to a more wearable and unisex-friendly 39.5mm. Then in 2020, a new 41.5mm case size was born, bridging the gap between the two diameters perfectly. The new Oris Aquis Date 41.5mm watch takes advantage of this redesigned case size but adds a vibrant pop of colour to the collection with its striking sunray cherry red display.

Since dive watches are no longer exclusively produced for underwater use only, models like the Oris Aquis keep proving their use as a daily wearer time and time again. The wristwatch got a facelift back in 2017 with modifications that included a reduced horn thickness for a more elegant feel on the wrist and refined crown guards that created a sleeker silhouette. Other improvements included its separated bezel from the case to aid grip, bolder hands and indices, and stylish gradient dial options.

Although the spec of the new Oris Aquis Date 41.5mm watch may be almost identical to the same-sized model released just last year, the watch certainly imparts a confident, bold and attention-demanding look when dressed against the wrist. The new cherry red sunray-finished dial is a testament to Oris’ daring nature. The manufacturer has not only played about discreetly with the Aquis’ design over the years but dares to experiment with colours like this that break away from the diving watch norm. The coloured dial is paired with very visible central hour and minute hands and a lollipop-tipped second hand. The Super-LumiNova coated hands and baton hour markers are joined by a date window at 6 o’clock with white digits for quick and easy referencing.

The bezel of the new Oris Aquis Date 41.5mm cherry red watch, however, does not feature a ceramic insert. Instead, the ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel has been replaced with a steel bezel with the 60-minute scale in relief, executed in a sandblasted matte grain finish. To enhance legibility, designers at the Holstein-based manufacturing facilities have chosen to polish the markings of the bezel, accentuating the grooves which in term help visibility. The finish is reminiscent of the brand’s 2019 Oris Aquis Date Relief model.

The Oris Aquis Date 41.5mm cherry red watch promises a solid case construction built from stainless steel with angular crown guards that feature distinguishable grooves. As mentioned earlier, not all Oris Aquis watch collectors will intend to utilize this dive watch down to 300-meter water depths but the water-resistant promise certainly adds an element of practicality, ticking the box as a watch suitable for wearing during sport or whilst on vacation. Protecting the intense cherry-red tones of the dial is a scratch-resistant domed sapphire crystal glass front with layers of anti-reflective treatment ascertained to both sides. On the back of the case is a transparent exhibition caseback crafted from mineral glass, which affords a very desirable view of the Oris 733 movement that beats within.

Unlike the Calibre 400-driven Oris Aquis Date 41.5mm watch released last October, this new cherry-coloured Oris Aquis watch is powered by the Oris 733. The self-winding automatic movement was first found in the Oris Aquis Date Dive watch but has also featured in the Artix Date, Artelier Date, ProPilot Date, Big Crown ProPilot, Chronoris and Divers Sixty-Five models. It features 26 jewels, performs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a 38-hour power reserve. As with all the brand’s chosen movements, whether in-house or not, the Calibre 733 bears the signature red rotor which can be seen through the watch’s mineral glass bottom.

In true Aquis style, Oris equip this dive watch with an integrated multi-piece stainless steel bracelet that wraps over the wrist with an ergonomically refined folding clasp and an additional diver’s extension facility. The three-link metal link bracelet completes the diver-ready look of the watch but also enables it to be easily worn alongside more formal attire whenever desired.
