Oris Aquis Carysfort Reef Limited Edition Watch Review
Thursday - 09 July 2020
With the release of their third Oris Aquis Carysfort Reef Limited Edition watch, Oris prove once and for all that their persistence for ocean conservation is no marketing ploy but a genuine desire to help better the world. This new limited edition of 2,000 pieces has been designed to aid the Coral Restoration Foundation who are fighting for the Carysfort Reef in Florida, the third largest barrier reef in the world and the only one in the United States.
Unfortunately, over the last 50 years, Carysfort Reef has become severely degraded due to tourism, overfishing and pollution, with coral populations declining by around 98%. The Coral Restoration Foundation has made it their mission to return corals back to the reef with its outplanting programmes and they have already successfully returned nearly 25,000 corals. With the help of Oris and the awareness and funds raised through sales of the new Oris Aquis Carysfort Reef Limited Edition watch, the Coral Restoration Foundation hopes they can get this figure to rise by at least 30,000 by the end of 2020.
This is not the first time Oris and the Coral Restoration Foundation have worked together, with their partnership first beginning in 2014 and the first Oris Carysfort Reef watch launched later in 2017. Earlier this year, we saw the second instalment with a stunning 18 carat rose gold model now followed a gorgeous stainless steel Aquis GMT. The robust divers watch is perfect for international travellers with its remarkable GMT complication that can track up to three different time zones at once while its ocean-blue dial, orange rubber strap and 300 metre water resistant rating makes it a great wrist companion for the ocean.
The new Oris Aquis Carysfort Reef Limited Edition differs most greatly from its rose gold counterpart for its classic stainless steel case, measuring to 43.5mm in diameter and 14mm thick detailed with brushed and polished finishes. Fitted to the case is a notched two toned black and blue ceramic insert on the bezel, something first featured on the Carysfort Reef Gold Limited Edition, which works as a unique day and night indicator. The black side corresponds to night-time hours and blue for daytime hours. The bezel also features an orange triangle at the 12H position to pair with the other orange accents scattered across the dial.
Fully aware of its purpose, the Oris Aquis Carysfort Reef Limited Edition watch features a stunning decorated case back engraved with different species of coral found in Carysfort Reef along with the limited edition number out of 2,000 pieces. The stunning blue gradient dial has also been carefully chosen to reflect the very waters in which the coral lies beneath. For optimal legibility, the dial is adorned with Superluminova coated hands and indexes and a large orange tipped GMT hand.
Powering each of the functions on the dial, the Oris 798 automatic winding movement is used and kept hidden within the 300 metre water resistant case. The Swiss made calibre is based on the Sellita SW330-1 calibre and provides central hands for hours, minutes seconds and 24 hour hand, date window and a power reserve of 42 hours. The three time zone readings can be set using the standard central hour hand, the central GMT hand with orange tip and the bi-directional GMT bezel in combination with the GMT hand. The automatic movement also promises a power reserve of 42 hours.
To complete the look, the Oris limited edition is fitted with scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass and a choice of either an orange silicon strap or a classic stainless steel bracelet, both fitted with a folding buckle with diving extension. The Oris Aquis Carysfort Reef Limited Edition is also presented in a unique box made from sustainable algae.
