Meistersinger Astroscope Limited Edition Watch Review

As single-hand watch manufacturer Meistersinger celebrate their 20th anniversary, they explore an ancient method of timekeeping which allocates the days of the week to celestial bodies in our solar system. With the Meistersinger 20th Anniversary Limited Edition, the iconic Astroscope model is given a heavenly makeover inclusive of a night sky dial, sunny orange accents and a rare weekday display.

An idea which dates back to the Babylonians follows the number seven which is considered to be a holy number connecting to the seven celestial bodies of our solar system: The Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Similiarly, just as most planets are named after Roman gods, most days of the week take their corresponding names from Norse mythology. It is this mythological notion that takes centre stage in the Meistersinger Astroscope Limited Edition in which the same allocation of the days of the week are placed on the dial. The allocation goes as follows: Monday/The Moon , Tuesday/Mars, Wednesday/Mercury, Thursday/Jupiter, Friday/Venus, Saturday/Saturn and Sunday/the Sun.

Fortunately, for the most of us that don’t know these celestial associations by heart, the days of the week are printed alongside their planetary counterpart on each 100 piece limited edition. At first, the days appear to be placed in a completely random arrangement but actually follow a constellation that appears every ten to twelve years in the northern hemisphere. Despite what many may feel is an initially confusing construct, the dial is made all the simpler with a white dot appearing beneath correct day of the week made. This is made possible by a rotating disk hidden beneath the dial decorated with a specific pattern of white dots.

Meistersinger are renowned for their initially confusing timepieces, having made a name for themselves solely on their manufacture of single-handed watches. The new Meistersinger Astroscope 20th Anniversary Limited Edition is no different delivering hour and minutes through a single central white luminous hand which contrasts effortlessly against the dark dial designed to represent the night sky. Meanwhile, familiar Meistersinger Arabic numerals in orange present the hours and a matching orange circular date window delivers an additional complication at 6 o’clock. The colour orange also continues through the “sunshine” orange leather strap.

Moving away from the centrepiece dial, the Meistersinger Astroscope Limited Edition continues to impress with a polished stainless steel case measuring to 40mm in diameter and 10.5mm in height equipped with domed sapphire crystal glass treated with an anti-reflective coating and a standard crown water resistant to 50 metres. On the back, another layer of sapphire crystal glass is fixed by six screws and delivers a mesmerising view of the automatic winding movement within.

Powering the Meistersinger Astroscope 20th Anniversary Limited Edition is the Sellita SW220-1 calibre which has been slightly modified to include the unique Meistersinger day of the week complication. The Swiss made movement also provides 26 jewels, a frequency of 28,800bph and a 38 hour power reserve. Through the case back, you can also enjoy the movement’s Côtes de Genève and perlage decoration.
