The Oris Big Crown ProPilot Rega Fleet Limited Edition Airbus H145

It always baffles me that air medical services like the UK’s Air Ambulance are funded entirely by donations from the public. It is neither supported by the NHS, by the government or by national lottery funding. It blows my mind – a service so important that saves more and more lives with each passing year continues to fulfil an integral role, reducing the burden on the NHS and providing vital services free of charge. But it’s not the only medical air service doing so. Rega is a non-profit Swiss organization that specializes in air rescue across the Swiss Alps. Its mission statement reads:

“We provide an around-the-clock service offering swift, expert assistance by air. In particular, we transport medical care to the casualty and help in emergency situations. This assistance also takes the form of medical advice and the use of our infrastructure. Our operations are characterised by our highly qualified, professional members of staff and the very best equipment available in the fields of rescue, medical and flight technology.”

The organisation operates 21 airframes which comprise 18 helicopters and 3 fixed-wing aircraft. Understandably, Rega has played an important role in repatriating Swiss patrons over the last 18 months during Covid 19. Paying homage to this, Swiss watchmaker Oris, whose red rotor logo is recognised across the entire globe, has released three different iterations of the Big Crown ProPilot watch. The timepieces salute the Bombardier Challenger 650, the AugustaWestland Da Vinci AW109SP, and the Airbus H145. The entire Rega organisation is funded by patrons, which if nothing else, underscores the vital role carried out by the service and its vulnerability. Whether or not the patrons receiving the medical care carried out by Rega can pay for the help they have received or not, the Air ambulance service is supported by 3.6 million Swiss patrons. Oris has made a very special caseback engraving that refers to the 21 aircraft operated by the Rega fleet. A total of 100 timepieces for each airframe have been manufactured by the prestigious watch manufacturer, totalling 2,100 Oris Rega Fleet watches in total.

“Professional pilots have had a hand in the design”

If it is not solely the importance of the work carried out by Rega that makes each Oris Rega Fleet limited edition watch so special, it is the process behind the design itself. To create this version of the Big Crown ProPilot watch, great care and consideration has gone into its architecture and accompanying features. Professional pilots have had a hand in the design of the wristwatch, which could potentially make this luxury pilot's watch one of the most purpose-built models manufactured by Oris to date. Interestingly, the pilots that had a say in the design of the new Oris Big Crown ProPilot Rega Fleet watch shared a need not only for a GMT function but also for features like a pulsometer. Adding a pulsometer and GMT function to the design of the pilot's watch meets the requirements of both aviation and medical professionals.

Oris has remained faithful to the basic DNA of its Big Crown ProPilot design, with a legible black dial and luminous plots marking out the hours and the central hands. In addition to the GMT function and the pulsometer scale, Oris has equipped the watch with a stainless feel case and completed it with a gunmetal PVD-coated finish. The execution gives the aviation timekeeping tool a somewhat modern edge, despite many other elements remaining very faithful to classic lines. Let’s take a closer look at the design of the new Oris Rega Fleet Big Crown ProPilot Airbus H145 in a little more detail...

A watch for aviation and medical professionals

As mentioned, the new Oris Rega Fleet watch is crafted from gunmetal PVD-coated stainless steel. Its size measures a compact 41mm diameter and the case is also integrated with 100-meter water resistance. The watch is also equipped with a bi-directional rotating bezel that features the aforementioned pulsometer scale upon its surface. It also features the familiar “golden hour” triangular index in red. A domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass front protects the surface of the watch’s black dial from dust, denting, moisture and temperature, and has been treated with a layer of anti-reflective technology to assist with clear timekeeping without any undesirable glare affecting one’s view. A closed caseback completes the design of the case. Engraved upon its surface is a reference to the Airbus H145 airframe. It’s a twin-engine helicopter with a four-axis autopilot and can perform with utmost precision. Specifically focused on intensive care patient transport and able to cover a broad operational spectrum that covers road and leisure accidents too – the importance of the Airbus H145 aircraft is perfectly portrayed through the engraved caseback and the very functional design of this new Oris Big Crown ProPilot watch.

The new Oris limited edition watch also features Super-LumiNova-coated Arabic numeral hour markers and a set of luminous central hour and minute hands. The matte black dial is also fitted with a black second hand, tipped with white Super-LumiNova and a black dual dime hand that references a 24-hour second time zone scale with its red triangular tip. There’s also a red Rega logo above the 6 o’clock location and a date window at 3 o’clock.

The new Oris Rega Fleet limited-edition H145 watch is powered by the Oris 798 self-winding movement based on the Sellita SW330-1 engine. This produces a power reserve of 42 hours and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The dual time movement with date, hours, minutes and seconds is a reliable powerhouse for providing precision that runs on the natural movement of the wrist.

To finish the design, the Oris Rega Fleet watch wraps very comfortably around the wrist with a classic-looking black leather strap, securing with a gunmetal PVD-coated folding clasp that has been engraved with the famous Oris logo. With strap changing tools provided, this black band can be alternated by an additional red rubber strap supplied with every purchase.
