Creating a watch that becomes recognisable across the globe is no easy feat – not even for an experienced luxury watch manufacturer. Why is the Maurice Lacroix Aikon such an iconic design?

There are so many appealing factors about the Maurice Lacroix Aikon watch. Most notably, these sports watches are offered in both quartz and automatic versions and convey the avant-garde style of the ever-popular 1970s steel sports watches. Sub-sections of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon watch collection include automatic chronographs, skeletonised dial versions, three-handed models and the Aikon Venturer. The Aikon’s fundamental DNA is similar in characteristics to the world-famous Nautilus watch developed for Patek Philippe by Gerald Genta and the equally successful Royal Oak watch from Audemars Piguet. These two icons went on to define modern sports watch culture during the 1970s. The steel sports watch craze continued into the 1990s, where another very important design came to light - the Maurice Lacroix Calypso. The Calypso incorporated many design elements from Gerald Genta’s masterpieces and in 2016 went back to the drawing board where experts at Maurice Lacroix gave it an overhaul. It was re-released under the name, Aikon. The distinguishing features of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon have always been its six polished bezel rider tabs and integrated strap/bracelet.

Powered by Swiss ETA movements or quartz movements for uncompromised reliability, some models from the Aikon watch collection are adorned with special Clous de Paris engraved dials or sun-brushed dials. These watches also come in men’s sizes measuring between 42 and 45mm and lady’s sizes measuring between 30 and 35mm. There are also 39mm unisex models, as well as elegant mother of pearl dial options and some top models from the range that are powered by in-house developed movements.

Reasonably priced and measuring a confident 44mm diameter, this stainless steel chronograph is dressed on a stylish blue and silver dial design, with splashes of orange to give the timepiece a subtle touch of vibrancy. Sitting proudly on the epidermis of this watch are double-stick markers at each hour location and tapering central hour and minute hands that have been treated with Super-LumiNova for assisted timekeeping in the dark or during the night. The central chronograph second hand is sported in orange, as is the small hand of the 30-minute sub-counter at 9 o’clock and the 1/10th of a second counter at 12 o’clock. The small second sub-counter at 6 o’clock is fitted with a silver-coloured hand to match the rhodium-coated hands and hour markers on the main dial. As a result of the dial’s  6-9-12 layout, the Maurice Lacroix lettering and logo have been relocated to the 3 o’clock position, whilst the date window sits against a clean white background at 6 o’clock.

The dial of this Aikon Chronograph is protected by a scratch-resistant pane of sapphire crystal glass. The surface of the glass has been treated with layers of anti-reflective technology to assist with an easy glance into the dial at any point during the day or night (even when under direct sunlight or artificial lighting). The stainless steel case of this Maurice Lacroix Aikon Chronograph watch is water-resistant to 100 meters and boasts a brushed surface effect. The six claws (or rider tabs) on the dial of this watch are polished in true Aikon style and pair well with the brushed blue-coated intervals around the bezel. These, in turn, coordinate with brushed blue-coated push-pieces at 2 and 4 o’clock, which sit pretty flat again the case, following the shape of the watch and leading to the model’s integrated lugs and strap system.
