A look at the Sinn 556 watch collection and why it’s so popular
Loved for its quality German engineering and is craftsmanship, the Sinn 556 is a popular tool watch that has a very distinct style, and here’s why. Up until now, the Sinn 556 watch collection held two distinct variations within its family; the 556i and the 556a – both of which come under the Sinn Instrument umbrella. The Sinn 556a is most notably recognised for its Arabic numerals located at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. The numbers are oversized and occupy much of the dial, unlike the 556i models, which feature stick markers for a more understated style. In addition to this, the latter also tends to have a glossy finish to its dial, whilst those Sinn watches from the 556a range have a matte finish for a distinct utilitarian aesthetic. Despite these differences, the Sinn 556 watch has always been a preferred choice for those who like a parred-back and disciplined design.
The Sinn 556i is notably darker than its counterpart and this has always been a favourite element among collectors. Its rich black glossy dial makes it incredibly legible and simple. The large rectangles highlight each hour marker, whilst the minute markers are smaller and more discreet, creating perfect proportions across the surface of the dial. The case manufacturing facilities for Sinn is located in Glashutte and it is here that the construction of each house for a Sinn 556 movement is created. The case of the Sinn 566 watch has a chamfered edge and tapering lugs, along with a screw-down crown and a crown guard that is neither too large nor too small. Evenly brushed and polished finishes across the surface of the satinised Sinn 556 watch constitutes a great dress watch too. In addition to being powered by a trusty automatic movement, the strap options of the Sinn 556 have always been varied, adding to the versatility and popularity of this tool watch.
The new colourful Sinn 556 watches
As a stark contrast from its former blue and black 556 watches, Sinn goes all-out with a colourful palette of dials inspired by gemstones. Capturing the same shimmering hues of emerald, citrine, aquamarine and carnelian – these striking 38.5mm models will appeal to both male and female watch collectors and are each limited to just 400 pieces worldwide. The four new models go by the name Emerald Green, Citrine Yellow, Aquamarine Blue and Carnelian Red. They confidently depart from the familiar aesthetic of the Sinn 556 model, whilst simultaneously keeping the simplicity of its dial and case in their grasp.
Each of the green, yellow, blue and red-coloured dials have received a metallic shimmer to their surfaces, enabling the legible hour markers and hands to pop. The layout of each dial follows the format of the Sinn 556i, with stick markers outlining the hour and minute track. Conveying a new sporty casual aesthetic, each model has been fitted with rhodium-coated appliques and hands – all of which have been treated with luminous material. The cylindrical shape of the Sinn 556 watch case is retained, as is the crown and crown guard at 3 o’clock. The satinised stainless steel case is also fitted with a scratch-resistant and anti-reflective pane of sapphire crystal glass. The strong material protects the surface of the shimmering gemstone-inspired dial from dust, denting, moisture, heat and light damage, and is also repeated on the back of the case to show off the automatic movement that performs inside the case at a constant pace of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The Calibre SW200-1 is a self-winding movement that produces a 38-hour power reserve and bears a total of 26 jewels. It is also certified to DIN standards for its anti-magnetic properties and features a second stop function, together with central hours and minutes. The no-date three-hander is integrated with a water resistance of 200 meters and features a screw-fastened caseback.
Each of the new Sinn 556 Emerald Green, Citrine Yellow, Aquamarine Blue and Carnelian Red models come fitted on a stylish grey canvas strap that secures with a Sinn-engraved stainless steel butterfly clasp.
