Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver Bronze Limited Edition Watch Review
Monday - 29 May 2023
The new Pontos S Diver watch from Maurice Lacroix is sure to delight devoted fans of the beloved 2013 model, with some newly designed features that remain subtle enough to enable the spirit of the popular dive watch to shine through its striking bronze design
The Pontos S Diver watch belongs to the company’s main Pontos collection – a range of simple no-frills designs that gets its name from a Greek sea god. Focusing on the bare essentials, Pontos watches promise exceptional readability, underscored by some integral functions in addition to the three-handed models, like GMT watches, moon phase displays and, of course, dive watches. Whether it is the Pontos S Diver that has drawn you to the collection before now or not, all watches from the series promise exceptional value for money and can be found in stainless steel or titanium versions. For a while, the Pontos S Diver has had to take a back seat whilst the Swiss manufacturer focussed its attention on developing the popular Aikon design. Although the Aikon was (and still is) worthy of all the attention it generates, the decision to do so meant that devoted fans of the Pontos S Diver watch were left gutted. Now that’s all changed and Maurice Lacroix has responded to the demand for the popular luxury dive watch to return. The brand has announced the release of some new additions to the line, including a striking bronze limited edition version.
To assist with cementing the durability and reliability of the new Pontos S Diver watches as tool companions, Maurice Lacroix has chosen no other than world-champion free diver, Lidija Lijic, who currently holds the record for staying underwater for 5 minutes and 43 seconds. Her entire life has centred around daring underwater missions and challenges, with little room for mistakes. The athlete, who enjoys venturing into warm seas as well as the icy conditions of the Himalayas, has shown enduring commitment and courage, as well as incredible mental strength throughout her challenges. Managing Director of Maurice Lacroix, Stéphane Waser explains why Lijic is such as perfect fit for the watch and its impressive capabilities underwater;
“When developing this latest PONTOS S Diver, we were keen to retain the spirit of the first-generation model, but push the performance envelope with various product enhancements. As an ML Crew member, it seemed logical to ask Lidija Lijic to test the new model...exploring its full potential, deep underwater. While I was already aware of her achievements and immense talent, I was struck by her sheer dedication, not only to her sport, but in everything she does. She proved the perfect test pilot for this divers’ watch which is water resistant to 30 ATM. Lidija also informs us that the watch makes a strong statement on dry land too!”
All the details you need to know about the new Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver Limited Edition bronze watch
The new Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver Bronze Limited Edition watch, as its name suggests, is crafted from bronze – a material that is often selected for dive watches thanks to its impressive saltwater-resistant properties. Its case, measuring a 42mm diameter, is also 300-meter water resistant for plenty of underwater exploration. Topped with a strong scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass front, this material acts as a barrier between the display and factors like dust, light, heat and moisture damage, whilst also offering anti-reflective properties for a clear view into the dial. To uphold the watch’s impressive water-resistant qualities, the new Pontos S Diver Bronze watch has been equipped with a screw-down crown at 3 o’clock, adorned with the ML logo. The other pusher, located at 2 o’clock has a matching deep blue circlet to coordinate with the dial and is used to turn the internal rotating bezel.
Perfect for measuring elapsed time whilst underwater, the internal rotating bezel is marked with a count-up scale and can be aligned with the minute hand on the dial. Both central hour and minute hands, along with the faceted stick markers around the hour track have been treated with plenty of Super-LumiNova for guided timekeeping in the dark. The dial also features a discreet date window that has a raised frame, enabling it to stand out against its black background when needed. Bronze minute markers are also chosen to reflect the seafaring tones of the bronze case.
Inside the heart of the Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver Bronze Limited Edition watch is the ML 115, which provides a power reserve of 38 hours once fully wound and comprises 26 jewels. It also performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations and is automatic. Promising unbeatable accuracy and reliability no matter what challenge lies ahead, the watch is limited to 500 pieces worldwide and comes with two straps. One is a vintage dark blue leather band that echoes the tones of the dial. The other is a dark blue rubber band embossed with the Maurice Lacroix lettering,
