Longines' Dress Watch Collection Grows with Flagship Heritage Moonphase Watches

Longines invites horophiles to enjoy the different phases of the moon on three new dials from the Flagship Heritage Moonphase collection

Now and again, Longines will sneak up on an unsuspecting audience and surprise it with a remastered design from its historical catalogue. As one of the biggest names in the horological market, it can do this with confidence. After all, the St Imier-based watchmaker does have an eclectic mix of legendary models to fall back on should it be looking to pay homage to a poignant moment within its successful past. This time, Longines masters have chosen to extend the Flagship Heritage Collection – a line of timepieces that pays respect to Longines watches of a bygone era.

The jack of all trades…

Over the years, the Flagship Heritage has worn many hats. The collection is diverse, with models that embody everything from a classic dress watch to a vintage sector dial, to an elegant moon phase complication. Chances are, if you’re in the market for a refined wristwatch with a reasonable price tag, you’re going to find something fitting from the Flagship Heritage line. In this article, we’re going to look at the latest to join this popular family of timekeepers. The new Longines Flagship Heritage Moonphase watches are available in three variants: a silver opaline option elevated by luxurious yellow gold-coloured accents, a silver sunray option with matching silver-coloured appliques, and an entrancing midnight blue dial option with a shimmering sunray finish. Each of the models pays tribute to the watchmaker’s popular Flagship watches of the past, fusing Longines’ technical expertise with the use of avant-garde materials. Let’s meet the new Longines Flagship Heritage Moonphase watches for 2023.

Longines is a master in producing men’s luxury watches with a chic twist. The Flagship watch collection, from which the Moonphase models derive, is a fine example of this and has been around since the 1950s. Let’s take a look at its key attributes:

  • The Flagship watch collection offers a diverse range of men’s and women’s watches to choose from
  • The collection is a staple to Longines’ catalogue to this day
  • Classic dress watches with a simple three-hand layout and date function are the most popular options belonging to the line
  • Versions with rectangular case shapes and small seconds functions, as well as chronographs, add more variation to the Flagship collection
  • Flagship Heritage watches, in particular, celebrate designs from the 1950s and 1960s, some of which house in-house developed movements for impeccable accuracy

The new Longines Flagship Heritage Moonphase watches

All three of the new references from the Flagship Heritage watch collection by Longines boast a sublime dose of retro, promising to impress those with a soft spot for the brand’s vintage designs (and let’s face it – that’s most of us!). Legions of horophiles are sure to be seduced by its 38.5mm case crafted from stainless steel. Its perfectly round silhouette frames a stunning composition of shimmering dial surfaces and delicate appliques. Beyond a discreet inner minute track on each dial is an hour track represented by stick markers in silver or yellow gilt hues as aforementioned. These encircle the gently tapering hands, finished in a sword shape, and sit underneath a dome-shaped piece of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. At the 6 o’clock location is a beautifully rotating disc that displays the positions of the moon exactly as they are seen in the night sky each evening. The hand that points to the date ring, which frames this elegant moonphase feature, is finished in the same (silver or yellow gold gilt) hue as the moon on the display, completing a beautifully proportioned window to the night sky.

Governing the hands of these new Longines Flagship Heritage watches for 2023 is the Calibre L899.5. It controls the astronomical function on the watch, the date and the central hour, minute and second hands. The self-winding movement is also fitted with a silicone balance spring, offering superior protection over magnetic field damage, whilst providing a power reserve of 72 hours once fully wound.

Whilst the sapphire crystal glass front of each of the three new Flagship Heritage Moonphase watches by Longines provides plenty of protection over the dial from factors like dust, scratching, denting, moisture, heat and light damage, the back of each model showcases an intricately engraved depiction of the collection’s famous emblem. A caravel on a gold medallion. The image is beautifully embossed onto the surface of a screw-down caseback – a feature that, along with a screw-down crown at 3 o’clock, helps uphold the case’s water-resistant rating.

Wear the new Flagship Heritage Moonphase watch on a brown, grey or blue leather strap depending on your preference for the dial colour. The leather bands have been carefully chosen by experts at Longines to compliment the dial colour and come fitted with a robust stainless steel pin buckle that ensures a snug fit to the underside of the wrist.
