IWC Adds Three Day & Night 34 Watches To Its Portofino Collection

IWC Schaffhausen welcomes another three 34mm models into its Portofino watch collection. The Portofino Automatic Day & Night 34 watches are available in 18ct rose gold or stainless steel and identify daytime and nighttime hours via a beautifully manufactured day and night indicator at 6 o’clock.

It’s probably what makes the design such a go-to option whether it be as a dress watch for special evenings out, a meeting in the office or a timepiece to mark a milestone reached in life. IWC Portofino watches are classic and versatile, and now the collection is growing once more. The family of wristwatches now welcomes three Automatic Day & Night 34 watches, which come in a choice of dial colour, case material and the option to add diamonds.
Why is the IWC Portofino watch so investible?
The IWC Portofino watch showcases a design that was inspired by the styling of pocket watches from a bygone era. In fact, legend has it that the model was conceptualised when Kurt Klaus and head designer Hanno Burtscher decided to take the Lepine moon phase pocket watch and make it into a wristwatch by adding lugs to each side of the case. Today, the Portofino watch is delicate, sophisticated and minimalist with refined proportions that make it an ideal fit for anyone with a slender wrist. In-house calibres with impressive power reserves stretching up to eight days are amongst some of these masterpieces, as well as perpetual calendars and tourbillons. Other popular choices include the moon phase complication and the Day & Night models powered by reliable Sellita-based movement, which brings us to these three new exciting additions to the line. The new Portofino Automatic Day & Night 34 watches
The Portofino Automatic is considered the entry-level watch into the world of IWC Schaffhausen, yet the collection offers a variety of different styles, materials and complications to pick and choose from. Those timepieces that are especially feminine are set with a total of 66 round brilliant-cut diamonds upon their bezels, yet all new 34mm Portofino watches also come with diamonds set above their hour markers on the main dial. What’s more, some of their leather straps are sourced by IWC from Santoni – an Italian manufacturer specialising in fine leather shoes.
New to the Portofino Automatic range are three 34mm Day & Night models. The reference IW459801 is a stainless steel model with an unadorned bezel, a silver dial and gold-plated elements. The reference IW659801 presents itself via rhodium-coated appliques dressed against a deep blue dial, framed by a 66 diamond-set bezel on a stainless steel case. Thirdly, the Portofino Automatic Day & Night watch reference IW659802 features an 18tct rose case with a diamond-encrusted bezel and a silver dial with gold-plated appliques. All three models, being part of the 34mm size range, come with a closed caseback and all offer 50-meter water resistance. The settings to each diamond have also been recently redesigned by experts at IWC, enabling them to catch the light more effectively than ever before. These diamonds amount to almost 1 carat in weight, appealing to ladies with a preference for glamorous watch designs and fine jewellery.
The day and night indicator located at 6 o’clock on the dial of all three of these watches is described by IWC as “charming” and a fitting description this is. Depending on whether it’s noon or midnight, you will see a sun or a moon motif displayed in the upper section of this feature, denoting whether it’s night or day. In true Portofino style, the dials of each watch feature Feuille-shaped hands and elegant stick markers around the hour track except for the 12 o’clock hour marker, which is instead represented by a Roman numeral. Out of all three, the steel and silver model is by far the most classic and understated. The two diamond-set models available in steel or 18ct rose gold can certainly be worn daily, but also make for great additions to elegant evening attire thanks to their luxurious diamond decoration around the bezel. Above every hour marker in each watch is a delicate round brilliant-cut diamond – each one protected underneath a convex piece of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. The surface of the glass is also treated with anti-reflective technology to afford a clear view into the dial, rid of any undesirable glare.
Of course, each new Portofino Automatic Day & Night watch measures a 34mm diameter and each case is integrated with 50-meter water resistance as well as the brand’s quick-change system for alternating the straps over. The blue model is fitted on a matching blue calfskin leather strap, whilst the steel and rose gold models with a silver dial are completed on a taupe brown calfskin strap with either a rose gold or steel pin buckle engraved with the IWC lettering. Sitting at a height of just 8.4mm, these models fit easily underneath the cuff of a shirt or office suit. The cases house the IWC Calibre 35180 Calibre, based on the Sellita SW300-1 automatic movement. The beating heart regulates at around 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of 50 hours. It also comprises 24 jewels.
