Introducing the TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph Special Edition

TAG Heuer’s history is steeped in an obsession with motorsport, and somehow, the luxury Swiss watch brand was yet to partner with one of the world’s greatest luxury car manufacturers, Porsche. That is until now, with both brands marking their new alliance with the release of a new TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph watch. Inspired by the timeless appeal of the Porsche 911 Carrera car, the special edition upholds the very philosophies that make up both industries: performance, precision engineering and avant-garde design.
Looking back over both brand’s histories, it seems impossible that the pair have never established a partnership before. Take the legendary 1971 film Le Mans starring Steve McQueen as an example. One of TAG’s most significant moments in history sees the TAG Heuer Monaco chronograph strapped to McQueen’s wrist as he drives a Porsche 911 with the Heuer logo prominent on both his racing suit and his racing car. Both watch and car manufacturers are also synonymous with the Carrera name, TAG Heuer for its namesake watch collection and Porsche for its powerful engine named the 911 Carrera. Why it’s taken so long for their pair to realise their picture-perfect marriage, we’ll never know, but we’re incredibly excited to announce their first partnered release today: the TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph Special Edition watch.
Based on the TAG Heuer Carrera Sport Chronograph released last year, the new TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Special Edition measures to 44mm in diameter and is delivered in fine-brushed and polished stainless steel. Fitted to its top, a black ceramic bezel is detailed with a white tachymeter scale alongside the Porsche logo in red in the official Porsche font. Another Porsche font can be found on the indexes of the dial, a font familiar to those that have seen the dashboard counters of Porsche cars. Continuing the red, black and grey Porsche-inspired colourway, the screw down crown is detailed in red while the chronograph pushers feature greyed out accents.
At its centre, the TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph Special Edition amazes with a unique dial inspired by the same grey gritty surfaces found on car racecourses. Described as an “asphalt” dial, the tarmac effect contrasts perfectly against the black-gold plated Arabic numerals and black snailed subsidiary dials for small seconds, 12 hours and 30 minutes. The dial ensures optimal legibility thanks to Superluminova coating on the central hands for hours and minutes and the large Arabic numerals, while further red detailing makes up the subsidiary counters and the tip of the chronograph seconds hand.
The powerhouse of the TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph Special Edition watch is the iconic Heuer 02 automatic winding movement, a column wheel and vertical clutch chronograph calibre with a formidable power reserve of 80 hours, 33 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The oscillating rotor of the Heuer 02 movement has also been modified to look like the steering wheel of a Porsche 911 Carrera which is on display through the sapphire crystal glass case back. Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment is also found on the front end, assisting in a water resistant rating of 100 metres.
As a special edition, the TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph is not limited to a set number of pieces nor will it remain a permanent fixture in the collection. There are two variants on offer, the first delivered on a classic H-link stainless steel bracelet and the second a black calfskin leather strap. The latter has been designed to replicate the interiors of the Porsche 911 Carrera car. Both models arrive in a special edition box with a black travel pouch and a red Porsche-inspired interior.
