Introducing the Seiko Astron GPS Solar “Titanium” Crystal Box Limited Edition

The new Seiko Astron GPS Solar “Titanium” Crystal Box Limited Edition watch is exclusive to just 1,500 pieces worldwide and takes its name from the box-shaped sapphire crystal glass found on original Seiko Astron watches. What’s more, the titanium model is powered by the 3X62 Solar-powered in-house built movement, which receives regular GPS updates through a window at 8 o’clock and boasts a horizontal dial pattern in modern grey tones.

You may have recently read about three newly released Seiko Astron GPS watches that have joined the Japanese brand’s core collection. I covered them in a little more detail here. They came in dial colours of grey, black and blue and featured a window at 8 o’clock that received a regular GPS connection and displayed the power reserve of the internally-fitted solar-powered movement sitting inside a titanium case. Alongside these three new releases is a limited edition watch that we’re going to take a closer look at today. Meet the new Seiko Astron GPS Solar “Titanium” Crystal Box Limited Edition watch

The Seiko Astron is the hero of the quartz crisis. Boasting unparalleled accuracy, it unveiled itself back in 1969 and has been one of the strongest value propositions within the quartz sector of the market ever since. The GPS chapter, however, didn’t start until 2012, when Seiko announced that its newest release could connect to the Global Positioning System and adjust to the appropriate time zone using the sun’s light as its source of power. The three new core models and the fourth limited edition watch from Seiko’s Astron GPS Solar range all feature a newly designed case that is slightly more angular and chiselled than previous models. Faceted bezels and an integrated bracelet keep the watch looking quite sporty whilst the titanium material chosen for the case promises a lightweight feel on the wrist. Let’s take a closer look at the new Seiko Astron GPS Solar “Titanium” Crystal Box Limited Edition watch

Sitting at a width of 41.2mm in diameter and a height of 12mm, the new Seiko Astron GPS Solar Limited Edition watch for 2023 has a water-resistant rating of 100 meters and secures with a tapered bracelet that features a three-fold clasp and a push button release mechanism, making it easy to dress on and off the wrist. The watch also offers a low centre of gravity, making it an ideal option for wearing during sports and outdoor activities. The surface of the case has received the Japanese brand’s unique Super Hard Coating making it even less likely to succumb to scratches and wear-and-tear marks. Through the design, there is a clear mix of brushed and polished finishes applied to the surface of the metal, whilst a scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass front provides ample protection over the dial.

The new Seiko Astron GPS Solar “Titanium” Crystal Box Limited Edition watch is exclusive to just 150 pieces worldwide. The interesting feature of the model is its name, taken after the design’s ‘crystal box’ pressed dial pattern. This pattern and its name are inspired by the legacy of the original Seiko Astron with its quartz-powered heart. This milestone in Seiko’s history stood for the first quartz-powered wristwatch ever launched. The watch was equipped with a box-shaped crystal glass front. The raised glass with its scratch-resistant properties promised impressive clarity for its time.

The polygonal shape of the new Seiko Astron GPS Solar “Titanium” Crystal Box Limited Edition watch is a striking feature that catches the eye with its polished sides and its scratch-resistant piece of sapphire crystal glass designed in the same profile as the original quartz model. The 3X62 Solar-powered in-house built movement with GPS functionality is the key advantage to this watch, with its ability to connect remotely to GPS satellite, even when you move between time zones. Even if it fails to update, it will remember the time of its previous successful connection and try to reconnect at this same time for another update.

As mentioned, whilst the other three core Seiko Astron GPS Solar watches featured dial textures that are inspired by the tuning fork-shaped quartz oscillators of the original quartz models from 1969, this limited edition Seiko Astron watch has a horizontally striped dial pattern that boasts alternating grey tones. The watch features a white date window at 3 o’clock, luminous baton hour markers and central hands, and a black-filled minute track around the edge of the dial. The integrated bracelet design of the new Seiko Astron GPS Solar limited edition watch is sure to prove popular with fans of the GPS Solar range, as well as those wanting to wear a watch that boasts significant technical refinement.
