Introducing the Seiko 5 Sports SKX Skeleton Watches
Thursday - 06 October 2022
Two new SKX Skeleton watches are joining Seiko’s 5 Sports watch collection with translucent dials in blue and orange that expose a day-date mechanism reminiscent of the earlier Seiko Time Sonar watch of the 1960s.
There were some amazing vintage Seiko watches that were overshadowed by the brand’s big runners back in the 1960s. Take, for example, the Seiko 7015-6010 Time Sonar watch – an incredibly creative model that often gets forgotten about when we think of Seiko watches from this bygone era. The 6138 and 6139 models were also released around the same time as some of Seiko’s iconic chronographs and were produced whilst Seiko’s Diani factory was competing to produce some equally innovative and memorable wristwatches. The Seiko Time Sonar watch, however, inspires two new Seiko 5 Sports SKX Skeleton watches. These new releases belong to a category of reliable, accurate and robust timepieces that make for great value propositions. The duo comprises a blue and orange version with translucent dials that provide a unique take on the day-date feature.
The Seiko 7015-6010 Time Sonar Chronograph
The Seiko 7015-6010 Time Sonar Chronograph watch was undeniably eye-catching for its time and still makes for a great conversation topic today. Its busy-looking greenish dial adorned with lots of faint writing looks totally Japanese. This detailing, which mixes Japanese Kanji with English font actually relates to the rotating day and date wheels exposed through the surface of the dial. It also features white hour slashes, a black outer minute ring with a black upward-sloping tachymeter scale and black segments running through the centre of the dial from left to right. There’s also a bright orange chronograph seconds hand that provides a punch of colour across the entire design. This translucent dial creates the impression of floating hands and indexes atop its surface – elements that have been borrowed by Seiko for the new 5 Sports SKX Skeleton watches.
The new Seiko 5 Sports SKX Skeleton watches
The two new models from the 5 Sports watch series are named the SKX Skeleton models and are offered in a blue and orange dial version. The SKX design harks back to the 1990s when Seiko revamped the earlier 1960s models, titling them with this reference. For over fifty years, the 5 Sports watch collection has been known for its reliability, performance and durability. Lower priced than many other sports watches on the market, the models remain below the £500 mark, making them great value-for-money watches.
Faithful to the much earlier Seiko 7015-6010 Time Sonar Chronograph, the new models echo the Japanese and English references to the alternating days of the week, which are exposed through a translucent coloured dial from which the watch takes its “skeleton” name from. The current day and date are exposed through a cut-out section, revealing black detailing on top of a white background. One difference to note in the newer design is its absence of the tachymeter scale. The outer black ring features the minute scale, whilst the grey-coloured hour and minute hands in a respective cathedral and arrow-tipped shape have been treated with Lumibrite for enhanced readability in the dark.
The blue and orange Seiko 5 Sports SKX Skeleton watches are both crafted from stainless steel and are integrated with 100-meter water resistance. The top of the case comprises a sheet of Hardlex glass whilst the back of the watch is closed. Also upholding the case’s water-resistant rating is a screw-down crown adorned with the Seiko emblem engraved upon its surface. The rotating bezel in both watches is filled with black but highlights the first 15 minutes of the 60-minute scale in respective blue and orange hues to match the colour of the dial. Whilst the blue reference SRPJ45K1 features a vivid red-orange central seconds hand, the orange watch reference SRPJ47K1 features a striking green-yellow hand with black Japanese and English fonts exposed behind an orange-coloured translucent dial.
The new Seiko 5 Sports SKX Skeleton watches are powered by the Calibre 4R36, which provides an impressive 41-hour power reserve once fully wound. It also performs at a rate of 21,600 vibrations and comprises 24 jewels. It sits inside a robust stainless steel case measuring a diameter of 42.5mm and a height of 13.4mm. To complete their retro, sporty aesthetics, the models are both fitted on a three-row stainless steel bracelet with a brushed effect. The three-fold clasp engraved with the Seiko lettering secures to the bracelet firmly and comfortably to the wrist, whilst a push button release mechanism enables the bracelet to be removed effortlessly and quickly without hassle.
