Introducing the new Breitling Premier B09 Chronograph 40
Tuesday - 06 April 2021
Two new Breitling Premier Chronograph watches continue the Swiss brand’s proud tradition in creating astounding chronograph watches, with a new compact 40mm-sized case in a choice of two materials and powered by a manually-wound Calibre B09 movement.
The two new Breitling Premier B09 Chronograph 40 watches present the time on a choice of two dial colours - a classic silver or a captivating pistachio-green. Customized for those with two feet firmly on the ground – these sporty, vintage-inspired chronographs offer a dressier alternative to Breitling’s aviation and dive watches with their traditional leather straps and sporty chronograph counters placed on an east-west axis.
A touch of tradition…
It doesn’t quite matter whether you’re a longstanding fan of Breitling watches or new to the Swiss brand’s eclectic pilot, diving and sports watch catalogue. That’s because over the last few years Breitling’s CEO, Georges Kern, has been redirecting the brand’s focus by stretching it beyond its confines within traditional aviation watchmaking. To do this, the brand is beginning to dip back into its archives, dragging out significant timepieces such as those from the Premier watch collection – a family of elegant 1940’s wristwatches designed for landlubbers. In particular, the Premier Heritage range pays homage to the brand’s founders – three generations of the Breitling family that shaped the future of the manufacturer’s success. Leon Breitling – founder of the company also developed a tachymeter scale that was able to measure speeds up to 150km. His son and grandson then developed independent pushers for the effortless facilitation over the start, stop and reset functions of the chronograph. Despite Breitling’s strong connection to the aviation industry and having built some technically and structurally sound timekeeping tools for underwater use too – the brand is clear in its approach to the new Premier B09 Chronograph 40 watches. Built especially for use on land, their designs codes stand independently against Breitling’s aviation watches and dive tools.
Two new Breitling Premier B09 Chronographs
Part of the 6 new dashing timepieces belonging to the Breitling Premier Heritage family is the Premier B09 Chronograph watches. Two 40mm manually-wound models that make good use of the brand’s recognisable vintage-inspired hands and Arabic numerals seen frequently throughout the collection. One thing to note about Breitling’s new Premier B09 Chronographs is their simplicity. Despite the technical skill and craftsmanship involved behind each model – the importance of each design rests on foundations of elegance and opulence. Breitling acknowledges the need for an impeccably stylish instrument to wear on the wrist every single day and as such, has designed these with taste in mind.
The dial
The new Breitling Chronograph B09 watches convey the same bi-compax chronograph layout but come clad in two new striking colours – a silver-toned dial paired with an 18ct rose gold case and an eye-catching Pistachio-green dial accompanied by a stainless steel case. The hour track in both wristwatches is characterised by polished Arabic numerals surrounded by a detailed minute track, further encompassed by a legible tachymeter scale. Of course, the tachymeter feature comes into use for all sport-related tasks. It can measure time based on speed or speed based on distance travelled. In addition to this, it also gives the dial a distinct technical appeal. Both the central hour and minute hands have been treated with a layer of Breitling’s Super-LumiNova material to assist with visibility whilst keeping track of the time during the night, or whenever you may catch yourself in low-light conditions. Traditionally, the chronograph counters arranged in the 3 and 9 o’clock arrangement offer 30-minute and small second functions respectively. Use the chronograph functions of the new Breitling Premier B09 Chronograph watch to measure how long it takes to brew your coffee before work or measure your travel time to work each morning – either way – the watch cleverly balances dial proportions, enabling it to be utilized just as easily as a companion for professional use as it can an addition to elegant evening attire.
The case:
The two new Breitling Premier B09 Chronograph watches come in different case materials. The silver dial version conveys a more luxurious aesthetic since its 18ct rose gold case imparts a sumptuous, indulgent feel on the wrist. The warming blush pink tones of this precious metal pair nicely with the gold hands and hour markers on the dial, protected of course, under a cambered sapphire crystal glass front. This strong sapphire glass is integrated with layers of anti-reflective technology applied to both sides of the glass. The back of the case is engraved with the “100M” lettering and the “Certifie Chronometre” reference, signifying its reliability under the water and as an accurate COSC-certified timekeeping instrument. The transparent sapphire caseback grants an unhindered view of the Breitling Calibre B09 movement. The green-dial version of the Premier B09 Chronograph 40 watch is designed in the same way as the silver version, but has been crafted from stainless steel. The crown is non-screw-locked but is equipped with two gaskets to ensure a water-tight environment inside the case for the movement to perform within.
The movement:
The two new Breitling chronograph watches are both powered by the Breitling Calibre 09, which is based on the brand’s Calibre 01 - the same movement it shares with Tudor. The 30mm-wide calibre is capable of performing at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and is manually wound. It produces an impressive 70-hour power reserve and features a column-wheel mechanism. Eradicating the risk of the chronograph second hand “jumping”, the movement is also equipped with a vertical clutch mechanism. The benefit of the vertical clutch is that it has no teeth to engage or disengage. Instead, the gears are always engaged – a superior performance that can be admired when activating a chronograph timing.
The straps
The new Breitling Premier B09 Chronograph watches feature two slightly different brown alligator straps. The green dial with steel case model boasts a gold-brown leather strap while the silver dial and rose gold case version features a dark brown leather strap. Both bands are executed on a folding clasp for a secure fit against the wrist.
The Breitling Premier B09 Chronograph 40 ref: AB0930D31L1P1 with green dial and steel case is priced at £6,200 and the ref: RB0930371G1P1 with silver dial and 18ct rose gold case is priced at £13,400.
