Introducing the Montblanc 1858 Automatic Date 0 Oxygen The 8000 Watch

The new Montblanc 1858 Automatic Date 0 Oxygen The 8000 is one of the latest editions to join the brand’s oxygen-free concept. The design is geared towards daring mountaineers and keen alpinists that can utilise this time and date model whilst elevated thousands of meters above sea level thanks to technology that prevents the oxidisation of its integral components and any undesirable fogging of the glass during extreme temperature drops.

Undeniably great for keen explorers, daring mountaineers and brave adventure-seekers, the practical and functional qualities of Montblanc’s 1858 watches cannot be overlooked. Whilst there are so many examples of how Montblanc watches have supported those with an unquenchable thirst for breaking boundaries in their quest for pushing the limits, there are equally as many examples to demonstrate how mountaineering is influencing the designs of Montblanc’s watches, especially as the manufacturer ventures into this new phase, where it celebrates 14 of the world’s highest peaks via a new collection named The 8000 series.

Watches from The 8000 collection pay tribute to Mark Maker Reinhold Messner who completed the challenge of reaching the summit of 14 high peaks over a period of 16 years and Nimsdai Purja, who did the same over a period of just 7 months without the need for supplemental oxygen (despite the conditions at the top of each mountain proving almost impossible for mankind to survive for more than several hours). As a true mark of respect and to honour this particular challenge taken on by Messner, the caseback of the new Montblanc 1858 0 Oxygen The 8000 watch has been adorned with a unique 3D laser-engraved picture denoting a special message.

The 41mm Montblanc 1858 watch is crafted from stainless steel and has been equipped with 100-meter resistance to help uphold a watertight environment underneath a strong piece of anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. Geared towards daring alpinists, the steel case of this new model is equipped with a black ceramic bezel that features luminous cardinal points that anchor the watch in true mountaineering spirit. In addition to this practical feature, the Montblanc 1858 0 Oxygen The 8000 watch is resistant to fogging of the glass and oxidisation thanks to its clever oxygen-free design. Creating an internal environment within the watch that is devoid of oxygen is a very clever thing. It not only prevents the oxidisation of important components within the watch but it also ensures that these components will last longer and continue to deliver a quality performance.

The dial of the new Montblanc 1858 Automatic Date watch is executed in a dark grey Sfumato glacial patterned dial that is achieved through an intricate process using special tools. The 12 Arabic numerals around the hour track, along with the two central cathedral-shaped hands emit a rich blue glow at night thanks to a generous portion of Super-LumiNova applied to their surface. In addition to this, the textured dial is designed to evoke the glacial patterns of the deep fissures and the unique play of light cast upon Mont Blanc’s largest peak, Mer de Glace, as well as serving as home to a date window located at 3 o’clock. A vibrant splash of colour has also been donated to the four key points around the minuet track in fifteen-minute intervals.

Powering the hands around the dial of this new Montblanc 1858 Automatic Date 0 Oxygen The 8000 watch is the Calibre MB 24.17. The self-winding movement is based on the Sellita SW200-1 a, which performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and produces a power reserve of 38 hours once fully wound. The model is fitted on an interchangeable stainless steel bracelet with a fine adjustment system that makes it easy to switch the watch onto a material strap whenever desired.

The 8000 reference in the name of this new watch and its accompanying Geosphere model and Chronograph version pay homage to 14 of the highest peaks in the world. The caseback of this watch is therefore engraved with the “Spirit of Exploration” lettering. In other models from the 0 Oxygen series, Montblanc uses a unique 3D laser engraving process that injects colour into the image of a mountain – a process that Montblanc is one of just a few specialists to master.
