Introducing the DOXA Sub 300T Clive Cussler Special Edition
Monday - 22 May 2023
Designed as a homage to author Clive Cussler – a devoted fan of the orange DOXA watch - the new DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler model is a special edition dive tool with an aged finish that celebrates a man who helped propel the success of the brand back in the 1960s
A lot of watches have been linked with Jacques Cousteau, but none more than DOXA. The brand’s demarcated bezel, vivid orange dial and robust case construction known as the DOXA SUB 300T model caught the eye of the famous scuba diver soon after its release back in 1967 and for 25 years, he became an advocate for these worthy dive tools. So when we talk about DOXA, Cousteau is normally the person who springs to mind when we picture these dive watches on the wrists of serious explorers of the great underwater world. So it may surprise you to hear that Clive Cussler had a huge, HUGE influence over elite groups of hardcore diving enthusiasts when he wrote about a fictional character who styled the watch on his wrist, bringing the bright orange DOXA watch under the spotlight.
Clive Cussler and DOXA Watches
It helped, of course, that he himself was a devoted DOXA fan and wore one himself, so it comes as no surprise that the successful dive watch manufacturer wants to pay its respects to Cussler and create a unique watch that pays homage to him alone. The American adventure novelist sadly passed away in 2020 but throughout his career wrote a total of 85 books that sold over 100 million copies. The non-profit agency he founded named NUMA actually discovered many shipwrecks as part of his fascination with the oceans, whilst his written work was reinterpreted on television with “Sahara” in 2005 and “Raise Of The Titanic” in 1980. His fictional hero character featured throughout this work was named Dirk Pitt. The tall, muscular pilot of the United States Air Force was named after the author’s son, Dirk Cussler, and was often portrayed with an Orange DOXA on his wrist. The interest behind this dive watch stemmed from Cussler’s work before becoming a writer, where he spent his time in a dive shop. Before leaving here, he was gifted his very own DOXA SUB 300T by his boss and the love started there.
The new DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition watch
The new DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition watch is a direct descendant of the orange DOXA seen on Dirk Pitt’s wrist and has been made a part of the company’s current collection. Although non-limited, it is specially numbered and introduces the new model in an aged and almost antique-like way, with all the specifications one would expect of the SUB 300T watch. The 42.5mm model is crafted from stainless steel and is integrated with 120-meter water resistance. A flat sapphire crystal glass top is one of the main differences between this watch compared to its ancestor. It is framed by a unidirectional rotating bezel with a 60-minute scale in black with a red outer scale and a toothed edge for an easy grip.
The screw-down crown of the watch has been partially integrated into the side of the case, whilst on the other side you can find the helium escape valve. Most intriguing of all, however, is the aged patina of the new DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler watch. These matte grey tones are rugged and edgy, giving the watch a weathered presence. On the dial of this watch is the image of an old compass on a beige-green background. This nautical finish is paired with painted hour markers in black with a generous helping of luminous material and black heavily lumed hands. The central second hand has a square motif in red that is also filled with luminous material. Further red details feature in some of the numbers of the date window. These numbers 7, 15 and 31 are a reference to Cussler’s birthday.
Flip the new DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler Special Edition watch over and you can admire a series of inscriptions that denote various shipwrecks discovered by the author’s agency, NUMA. The side of the case also features a special edition number, whilst inside the tough case is the Sellita SW200-1. The automatic movement promises a power reserve of 38 hours and a performance rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
To complete its rugged and aged look, the new SUB 300T watch by DOXA is fitted on a vintage-looking beads-of-rice bracelet crafted from stainless steel, which secures to the wrist with a folding clasp and a ratcheting wetsuit extension. The presentation box in which the watch is supplied is another unique and quirky feature and is shaped like a book, where an additional NATO strap can be found inside. Additionally, you also get to make use of a third FKM rubber band with a steel folding clasp in the same aged coating.
