Introducing the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Red Radar Ceramic Limited Edition

The new Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Red Radar Ceramic Limited Edition watch has arrived. Limited to just 999 pieces worldwide, it features a modified rotating-discs-display adorned with air traffic control-inspired references and a sleek all-black case.

Bell and Ross may not be the oldest luxury watch manufacturer but when it comes to aviation-inspired timepieces, it really knows what it’s doing. Back in 2011 Bell and Ross released the BR 01 Red Radar Limited Edition watch. It comprised three independent concentric discs that offered a completely new and unique way to read the time. Its design was inspired by an air traffic control instrument – the radar. The watch imparted a strong technical look with the functions of the hands and dial merging into one plane. Mirroring the screens of air traffic control rooms, the BR 01 Red Radar Limited Edition watch featured red-tinted crystal, two graduated axes and an anti-reflective matte black PVD-coated stainless steel case. This design served as inspiration for other models to come too. In 2020 Bell & Ross released the BR 03-92 HUD, which stood for “Head-Up-Display” – a tool often seen in the cockpit of fighter jet planes.

The BR 03-92 HUD featured a green transparent glass screen, imitating the display information on a pilot’s visual field. In this unique design, the central area of the design depicted the hours, referenced by a bright green printed triangular motif, while the minutes and seconds are differentiated by baton hands. Now, the new Bell & Ross Red Radar watch has an updated ceramic case and a couple of stylish black straps to choose from. It goes to show that the aviation industry is still the perfect playground for this luxury watch brand, which goes above and beyond with each new innovation, demonstrating that creative direction is still an integral part of the watchmaking process by co-founder Bruno Belamich.

The Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Red Radar Ceramic Limited Edition watch

Taking design cues once again from the original Bell & Ross Red Radar, the dial of the new limited edition Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Red Radar Ceramic watch is presented underneath a red-tinted sapphire crystal glass (as opposed to the HUD’s green colour) and features an inner minutes disc indicated by a red printed fighter jet plane. The outer section portrays the hours of the day in quarterly plots, characterized by crisp red Arabic numerals and a passenger plane that rotates on a concentric disc. The central second hand is coated in red and the markings around the scales are all aircraft-inspired. Above this unusual dial construction is the sapphire crystal glass lens which grants an effortless view into the dial whether during the day under the rays of the sun or under artificial light by night. The colour is applied to the underside of the glass to create its intense yet transparent view into the aviation tool display.

Similar to the production of the original Red Radar watch created back in 2011, the new Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Red Radar Limited Edition watch for 2021 is a technical marvel in itself. Take, for example, the discs which would normally weigh thirty times more than a hand. Advanced watchmaking engineers at Bell & Ross had to create ultra-light discs to prevent any drop in power reserve or over-exertion of any delicate components. The discs also needed to be sufficiently strong, and so to minimise friction and avoid distortion – Bell & Ross achieved a delicate balance in materials and proportions. Meeting these exacting standards, of course, was no mean feat since it involved the development and research of new materials and techniques to reach such expectations. Maintaining a constantly parallel position to one another, these discs are also adjusted to the nearest micron.

How does the new Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Red Radar Ceramic Limited Edition watch wear on the wrist?

In terms of wearability the BR 03-92 Bell & Ross Red Radar Ceramic watch remains faithful to its slightly smaller case size compared to its larger BR 01 sibling, measuring a compact and comfortable 42mm diameter (as opposed to the broader 45mm of the BR 01 model). That said, since the watch is squarish in shape, it certainly packs a punch on the wrist, promising the dramatic, military-inspired wrist presence that we have all come to know and love about a classic Bell & Ross aviation watch. The case of the new Limited Edition Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Red Radar watch is crafted from black ceramic and finished in a matte effect to give it a powerful, masculine and dynamic look on the wrist. Inside this robust house, also equipped with 100-meter water-resistant technology, is the automatic BR CAL 302. This self-winding engine is based on the Sellita SW 300-1 ebauche engine but with modifications for the rotating discs. The movement performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a useful 42-hour running time.

To secure around the wrist, there is a choice between a black rubber strap or a black ultra-resilient synthetic strap – each one complete with a classic black PVD-coated stainless steel pin buckle. The watch retails at £3,600.
