Introducing the Alexander Shorokhoff Deep Ding Diving Limited Editions

No, that’s not a spelling mistake in the title, luxury watch brand Alexander Shorokhoff has released a new duo of high performance diving watches named the “Deep Ding”. Limited to just 30 pieces each, the designs take their name from both the English and German translations of the word deep, “deep” and “ding”, and they mark the very first timepiece produced by the German watch manufacturer to be water resistant to 100 metres.

The Deep Ding Diving Limited Edition watches were born from the needs of Alexander Shorokhoff’s good friend Michael Gebre Ab, a watch enthusiast and a yacht owner who had always dreamed of a reliable and waterproof watch for his ocean adventures. With this motivation enough, Alexander Shorokhoff decided to develop their first 100 metre water resistant diver’s watch. Anyone remotely familiar with Alexander Shorokhoff will have already witnessed their extraordinary avant-garde approach to luxury watch design with their collections commonly embellished with creative shapes and colours, fine engravings and rare materials. With this same philosophy in mind, it was important that their new divers watch remained an emotional and artistic adaptation of a diving instrument, free from any conventions yet still solid and robust for the water.

First glance at the two new Alexander Shorokhoff Deep Ding Diving watches and it is clear that their avant-garde attitudes were established. Immediately, centre stage, the designs feature a unique housing construction with a grille that secures the case and protects the dial. This cage-like architecture is engineered from six separate stainless steel rods, three of which are vertical and three horizontal, each bent to a 90 degree angle and fixed into place by twelve fixing screws. For us, the grid evokes the images of a window grill on a vintage scuba divers’ helmet, or for a slightly more menacing image, the bars of a cage while shark diving. Its construction is truly unique and like nothing we have ever seen before, neither from Alexander Shorokhoff nor any divers watch.

The cage offers more than just aesthetic brilliance, but it holds the watch case, sapphire crystal, upper bezel and case back all together in one secure bond, creating a solid housing resistant to water pressures up to 100 metres. This means each Alexander Shorokhoff Deep Ding Diving Limited Edition watch is perfectly suited for swimming and shallow snorkelling. The water resistant rating is also assisted by two crowns, one located at 2 o’clock and the second at 4 o’clock. The crowns are double sealed and positioned as such to avoid any external damage; the first allowing you to manipulate the internal rotating bezel and the latter to set the time.

There are two Alexander Shorokhoff Deep Ding Diving watches to choose from, the first under reference AS.DD1 features a mesmerising white mother of pearl dial encased within a generously sized 45mm stainless steel case. The case is equipped with a rose gold PVD coated case middle, lugs and internal bezel while the outer bezel and crown is coated in black PVD colouring. In contrast, the second reference AS.DD2 boasts a dark blue mother of pearl dial and has an all-black PVD coated 45mm stainless steel case. Both case backs are beautifully engraved with a three-dimensional image of two turtles.

Like day and night, the two contrasting coloured mother of pearl dials are perfectly connected to the ocean boasting a magical iridescence found only on the inner surfaces of oyster and abalone shells. As well as being beautiful, the dials continue to ensure effortless use for diving with a large 60 Arabic numeral at 12 o’clock, huge black lacquered central hands for the hours and minutes and a selection of box-shaped indexes, all of which are treated to a coating of glow in the dark Superluminova. The dials of the Alexander Shorokhoff Deep Ding Diving Limited Edition watches also boast a unique globe at 6 o’clock with cardinal points, offering a pop of colour and a tool-like vibe.

Powering the luminous hands for hours, minutes and seconds is the tried-and-tested Sellita SW200-1 automatic winding movement, otherwise known as the ETA 2824. To reduce its widespread use, Alexander Shorokhoff have put their own stamp on the Swiss made calibre adding additional blued screws and a hand-engraved oscillating rotor – despite us sadly not being able to see them as the movement reminds hidden behind the closed case back. The Sellita SW200-1 also promises a power reserve of 38 hours and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.

Completing their mission as waterproof watches, the Alexander Shorokhoff Deep Ding Diving Limited Editions secure to the wrist by black rubber straps. Of course, in typical Alexander Shorokhoff fashion, even the rubber bands refuse to remain plain with the interior wonderfully embossed with a wave-like pattern just like that seen on the case back while the exterior is printed with the slogan "Art on the Wrist". The straps are then secured by a polished and brushed folding clasp engraved with the German watch manufacturer’s logo. As limited editions of only 30 pieces each, the Alexander Shorokhoff Deep Ding Diving watches are also presented in a special watch box designed in a navy blue with a wavy fabric cover and a unique peephole so you can see the watch even when the box is closed.
