IWC extends its popular Portugieser Chronograph range with a green sunburst dial that looks incredibly beautiful when paired with elegant or professional attire.
The allure of the IWC Portugieser watch
It’s a well-known fact amongst IWC watch fans that the Portugieser collection holds the most examples of the brand’s horological expertise throughout its diverse range of elegant timepieces. The design of the Portugieser was born out of the design of a pocket watch that was made by the company in response to a request made by two Portugieser merchants who required a large wristwatch with the precision of a pocket watch. As such, the pocket watch calibres 74 and 98 were used to power a watch that was noticeably large on the wrist. The imposing size of the Portugieser has been one of the many desirable features of this design, along with visible yet classic-looking Arabic numerals and feuille-shaped hands. As such, it has become an icon in its own right, thanks to a combination of traditional watchmaking techniques and state-of-the-art technology.
The IWC Portugieser watch is broad and versatile with designs that span from a simple automatic three-hander to a sportier chronograph, as well as more complex minute repeaters and perpetual calendars. Amongst the collection are movements that provide a staggering 7-day power reserve and flyback chronograph functions too. The Maison continues to make modern iterations of this very popular wristwatch, such as the recently released green chronograph watch reference IW371615, which we’re going to look at in more detail today.
The Portugieser Chronograph is one of the company’s most popular and successful designs. The most recent models are powered by the automatic Calibre 69355, which IWC borrows from the Valjoux 7750 but hand assembles in its own facilities. Today’s Portugieser Chronograph watches, however, are not so big in size. Instead, they offer a very manageable 41mm size and are recognisable for their chronograph dials that offer functions such as small seconds, 12-hour and 30-minute features. Since 2020, IWC has been outfitting its chronograph watches with the Calibre 69355, as aforementioned. The movement’s 194 components offer a peerless performance behind a sapphire crystal glass exhibition feature sealed to a case that is crafted from either stainless steel or 18ct rose gold. Of course, the watch is also offered in a range of different colours, none more striking than this latest sunburst green reference IW371615.
The new IWC Portugieser Chronograph IW371615 in green
The recently released green IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Chronograph watch is crafted from stainless steel and measures a diameter of 41mm with a height of 13mm. The case has been equipped with a water resistance of 30 meters, whilst the back of the case is sealed with an exhibition caseback crafted from sapphire crystal glass. IWC experts have chosen the same material for the front of the watch to ensure you get a crystal clear view of the stunning deep green nuances on the chronograph’s dial. Whether you plan to use the chronograph functions or not, the push-pieces at the 2 and 4 o’clock locations on the case are beautifully polished to enhance a classic style.
40 hours of power reserve is granted with the new IWC Portugieser Chronograph watch courtesy of the Calibre 69355. It performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and features 27 jewels along with Cotes de Geneve decoration that can also be admired through the back of the case. Onto the dial, the deep green hues of the sunburst effect across the dial pick up light beautifully and combine perfectly with the silver tones of the dial’s rhodium-plated elements. These include the slender needle-shaped central hour and minute hands, the slim central chronograph seconds hand, the crisp Arabic numeral hour markers and the IWC Schaffhausen lettering at 3 o’clock. This brand lettering balances out two chronograph counters at 12 and 6 o’clock offering 30 minutes and small seconds.
The crown at 3 o’clock is engraved with the IWC logo as another stamp of authenticity and expert craftsmanship. The new green IWC Portugieser Chronograph watch is completed on a classic black alligator leather strap with a polished stainless steel buckle for a traditional finish against the wrist.
