Hands-on with the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 A522 Alpine Watch
Tuesday - 06 September 2022
Limited to just 999 pieces, the new Alpine watch release from Bell & Ross is the BR 03-92 A522 model with a sleek matte-black ceramic case and a sporty Formula 1-inspired dial in shades of blue to mirror the Alpine F1 team’s livery
So, the story between Bell & Ross and Formula 1 goes a little like this. The original Renault F1 team had forged links with watchmaker, Bell & Ross back in 2016, yet the colours associated with this collaboration have always been yellow - the French Formula 1 team’s livery. When the team changed to the Alpine F1 name, its associated colour instantly became blue, which just so happens to be the French national colour. It was a perfect opportunity for Bell & Ross to switch up the design of the BR 03-92 as well. The Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Alpine also earnt itself a range of its own – the Alpine watch collection. Three models currently sit within this range, that is, until now. Joining the BR V3-4 A521 watch, the BR 03-94 A521 and the BR-X1 A521 model is the new Bell & Ross BR 03-92 A522 watch. Still very much blue in colour but with a changed livery put on display through its striking dial, the new Bell & Ross Alpine watch for 2022 reflects a new strong and fluid design for the Formula 1 team’s 2022 season.
Showcased in its usual emblematic square-shaped case with a round bezel, the new Bell & Ross BR 03-92 A522 model is crafted from matte black ceramic – different from the steel limited edition watches released last year. Upon the case are the familiar four screws positioned in all corners of the case and the model is 100-meter water resistant. The design of the new Alpine watch for 2022 by Bell & Ross is based on the trusty design of the BR 03-92. It features 42mm x 42mm case dimensions, creating a very bold and dramatic look on the wrist. The height of the case measures a depth of 10.4mm and the top of the case is sealed with a strong piece of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. The surface of the glass is treated with layers of anti-reflective technology, enabling the white Arabic numeral hour markers executed in a Formula 1 format to be read clearly and precisely when under direct sun or artificial lighting.
The simple time and date display of the new Bell & Ross Alpine watch matches this year’s livery but foregoes the pink accents. Instead, the blue and white tones contrast beautifully against a matte black background. The raised inner flange of the dial with a minutes and seconds scale matches the same blue hue used in the execution of the central seconds hand, completed with the Alpine logo as the counterweight. Underneath the “Automatic 100M” lettering at 6 o’clock is a date window, sitting below the blue, white and red colours of the French flag. The white numerals of the date aperture sit against a black background in its new relocated position from 4:30. The hour markers and hands have been treated with a layer of Super-LumiNova for enhanced readability in dark or low-light conditions.
The new Bell & Ross BR 03-92 A522 Alpine watch has been completed on a black rubber band, which cements the wristwatch’s sporty racing-inspired aesthetic. The perforated band secures to the wrist with a pin buckle crafted from stainless steel that has been coated with a black PVD finish to keep in line with the rest of the matte black ceramic case. Inside a genuine Bell & Ross presentation box is an additional black synthetic fabric strap that can be fitted to the new Alpine watch to change the look of the watch to something a little more casual. The watch is also powered by the BR-CAL.302 Calibre, which provides a power reserve of 42 hours and is based on the design and architecture of the Sellita SW300.
