Garmin Launches New EPIX 2 Smartwatch
Tuesday - 18 January 2022
Generation 2 of Garmin’s EPIX smartwatch is here and with it we’re welcomed to a high-resolution bright AMOLED display, touchscreen and buttons and a superior battery life of up to 16 days.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost seven years since the original Garmin EPIX watch was released and it’s even more surprising that it’s only now that the high-performance colour mapping GPS wristwatch is getting a second relaunch. Just like the original EPIX, the new Garmin EPIX 2 watch collection perfectly merges Garmin’s innovative handheld mapping unit technology with multisport wearables so you can employ full downloadable maps with GPS satellite networks on a wearable touchscreen smartwatch.
There are of course a number of improvements introduced to us on the new Garmin EPIX 2. Other than the obvious change in watch face, which was originally square-shaped, the second generation wearable boasts three key features: a new AMOLED display for superb legibility, a touchscreen for everyday smartwatch features and a superior battery life promising up to 16 days of power. The latter is particularly impressive, especially for an AMOLED device.
There are currently four Garmin EPIX 2 watches to choose from, all engineered from titanium with fibre reinforced polymer housing. The first is finished in a Black DLC coating with sporty red accents on the crown and a sporty black rubber strap. The second model is left bare in polished titanium with subtle lime green accents and a white rubber band. The third Garmin EPIX 2 watch in the line-up is arguably the dressier out of the trio bringing together a black DLC Carbon Grey titanium case and a brown calfskin leather strap. These three all feature sapphire crystal and are built from titanium while the last model is crafted from stainless steel with a slate rubber strap and Corning® Gorilla® Glass DX.
For us, the Garmin EPIX 2 Sapphire are the ones to keep your eye on offering the same remarkable scratch resistance as the recently released Garmin Fenix 7 watches. The sapphire crystal protects the AMOLED always-on display with a 454x454 pixels resolution which measures in at 33.02mm in size taking up the majority of the 47mm case diameter. As you can imagine, the titanium Garmin EPIX watches are also incredibly lightweight weighing only 70 grams on the wrist and are water resistant to 100 metres.
As a multisport GPS watch, the Garmin EPIX is undeniably equipped to take on all your outdoor adventures offering multi-GNSS support, ABC sensors including an altimeter for elevation data, barometer to monitor weather and 3-axis electronic compass, a ClimbPro feature, ski maps, golf maps, round trip routing and turn-by-turn navigation. There’s also multi-continent TopoActive maps which you can download onto the Garmin EPIX Gen 2 Sapphire via Wi-Fi so you can view terrain contours, elevations, summits, parks, coastlines, rivers, lakes and other geographical features.
