First Place for the New TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph Racing Green Watch
Thursday - 19 September 2024
Colours of British racing green imbue the new Monaco Chronograph Racing Green watch from TAG Heuer.
There was no question that back in 2021 when TAG Heuer released the Monaco ref. CBL2116.FC6497, green was the new black. TAG Heuer nailed it with the Monaco Heuer 02 in a green fume dial. It was quite possibly one of the nicest green-dial watches the world had ever seen and it launched right in the middle of the green watch craze. The limited edition of 500 pieces sold like hotcakes, leaving those who weren’t lucky enough to grab one for themselves hugely disappointed. In ways, TAG Heuer remedied enthusiasts’ longing with some green Carrera watches last year. But the iconic Steve McQueen watch just hit differently. The Green McQueen was a compact 39mm, and featured stainless steel for the case, contrasting black-filled chronograph counters in the unusual bi-compax layout, and a fully integrated column wheel chronograph movement. There was little to grumble at. So, there are no prizes for guessing why TAG Heuer has released another take on the Monaco watch, this time with green-filled counters on a silver dial. Indeed, this is what we call a semi-panda – a panda dial that does not conform to the usual black and white colours. It’s time to explore the new TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph Racing Green watch reference CAW218E.FC6565.
Quick Round-Up of the Monaco
The TAG Heuer Monaco has been around since 1969 and, over the years, has become an embodiment of racing ideals. Ever since legendary actor, Steve McQueen wore the watch in the making of the “Le Mans” film, the timepiece has been an iconic collectible. The watch revolutionised the watchmaking industry from the 1960s onwards. It was the first square-shaped, water-resistant chronograph watch the market had ever seen, plus it featured two eye-catching “squircle” chronograph counters positioned at 3 and 9 o’clock. It also housed the Calibre 11 – a workhorse capable of keeping accurate time and fulfilling stopwatch features with accuracy. Today, the Monaco still embodies the authentic spirit of classic racing cars and remains a sporty icon. Since the beginning, TAG Heuer has worked tirelessly to innovate, improve and modernise the Monaco whilst still retaining all its most appealing qualities., The brand has done good again, leading us to the most recent addition to the collection today.
The New TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph Racing Green Watch
The new TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph Racing Green watch represents British colours and continues to connect the threads of DNA from the company’s history as a “mascot” for motorsport racing, right through to its modern watchmaking practices. Each country within the car racing industry, of course, has its own livery to match its country of origin. The French are associated with blue, German with white, and Italy with red. Serving as the latest inspiration for the collection, TAG Heuer has released the new model in celebration of Britain’s racing green colour.
The green livery for Britain has an interesting history, stretching all the way back to when Napier 50 won the 1902 Gordon Bennett Cup under Selwyn Edge. Following that, the 1903 event was hosted by Great Britain, hence where the British Racing Green colour originates from. As such, the entire design of the new TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph Racing Green watch is inspired by historical racing cars and their yellow and white accents. Honouring the engine-turned dashboards of 1920s and 1930s sports cars, the brand opts for a silver sunray brushed dial with 12 light-green coloured luminescent-coated dot markers and eight polished and faceted hour markers in the baton style.
At the 12 o’clock location, you’ll note a visibly obvious yellow stripe running down the applique. This complements the central chronograph seconds hand and has been inspired by the yellow accents seen in historical racing cars of a bygone era. In honour of the traditional racing green colour, the sub-dials for the chronograph functions are tastefully executed. The 3 o’clock location is where you can reference the small seconds function, while the 9 o’clock location features a 30-minute counter. Nestled between both of these green-filled squircle-shaped chronograph counters is a legible date window at 6 o’clock. The TAG Heuer name and the reference to the Monaco name are located at the top of the dial at 12 o’clock. The former is a heritage Heuer name, bringing strong hints of nostalgia to the forefront of the design. This element alone is sure to appeal to connoisseurs and TAG Heuer enthusiasts alike.
Experts at TAG Heuer use sapphire crystal glass to form a protective surface across the dial. The material is second hardest to a diamond and bears impressive scratch-resistant qualities. TAG Heuer also equips the surface of the glass with layers of anti-reflective technology to assist a clear view into the dial. In true Monaco form, the left-sided crown sits with prominence and confidence on the unconventional side of the case. This design feature was initiated in 1969 and has remained one of the integral features of the Monaco watch’s DNA throughout the decades. Inside the case is the Calibre 11 – a movement based on a Sellita movement for guaranteed reliability and accuracy. The movement performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 40 hours once fully wound.
Unlike the 2021 green fume version, this new TAG Heuer Monaco watch is crafted from grade 5 titanium with a sandblasted finish. The material is perfect for the racing-ready design, combining robustness with lightweight properties. Turn the case over and you can catch a glimpse of the Calibre 11 performing inside this ergonomic case thanks to a sheet of sapphire crystal glass that promises clear visibility into the complex world of mechanical timekeeping. A green perforated leather strap completes the look of this sporty TAG Heuer Monaco Racing Green Chronograph. It secures with a titanium folding clasp bearing the iconic TAG Heuer logo. As this is a 1 of 1000 limited edition, the caseback also bears the unique number of the model, while the presentation box itself is finished in black and yellow leather.
