Thursday - 18 March 2021
Jura Watches delves deep into Tom Brady’s IWC Schaffhausen watch collection to discover what makes the American football quarterback really tick.
IWC Schaffhausen has a cherished history in the field of aviation. It has created professional dive watches for deep-sea explorers, refined the art of manufacturing elegant dress watches, perfected the manufacture of its own in-house mechanical movements and developed various ground-breaking patents to enhance the performance and accuracy of its exquisite timepieces, but it is also proud of its inextricable links within the sporting industry, particularly American football. Holding almost every major quarterback record is Tom Brady, who shares many of the Maison’s values in perseverance, patience and the sheer grit and determination it takes to reach the pinnacle of success…
Just as IWC founder, Florentine Ariosto discovered his passion at the mere age of just 27 years old, Tom Brady too had a dream from a very young age. A dream he was never going to give up on. Surprisingly, that dream extends beyond making it to the top of his career as an American footballer quarterback. He also longed for the success and the status to enable him to grow his own collection of fine luxury watches. That hobby comes at a price, and so reaping the benefits of his career soon became much more about choosing classic timepieces to express his taste in craftsmanship as opposed to buying all the fastest and flashiest cars. IWC Schaffhausen watches had always been on his bucket list and since a watch is often purchased as a way of marking a moment of success in one’s career - this is where the love affair between Tom Brady and IWC watches began.
Brady has gone on to play twenty seasons and achieved a total of six Super Bowl championships with the New England Patriots. As of the last two years, the Rugby champion has become an advocate for IWC Schaffhausen, styling some of the manufacturer’s finest timekeeping instruments on his wrist. He now plays for Tampa Bay Buccaneers and holds down virtually every major quarterback record including touchdown passes and completions. In addition to this, he is also the oldest player to earn the Super Bowl MVP title. But what makes this player even more interesting to watch, particularly if you share his love for IWC Schaffhausen watches, is the fact that he’s a man of good taste and knows exactly what he’s looking for when it comes to growing a unique collection of authentic horological instruments. The partnership between Tom Brady and IWC is particularly special and it’s partly down to the fact that the American footballer’s love of IWC watches was naturally in-built long before the opportunity to become brand ambassador emerged.
The world-class athlete had his sights set on owning an IWC watch of his very own from a young age, and like his performance on the pitch, he never took his eyes off the prize. When a man with as much determination and will power as Tom Brady wants something – he’s going to stop at absolutely nothing to get it. The modern-day icon is now a brand ambassador for IWC Schaffhausen but also an enthusiastic IWC watch collector who has an affinity with the highly esteemed manufacturer’s steadfast approach to unique watchmaking. As a man with a keen eye for detail, it seems no other athlete would be a more natural fit for the IWC family.
Tom Brady’s IWC watch collection is now in excess of 20 timepieces (and counting). These comprise the likes of the IWC Ingenieur, Portugieser, Top Gun, Spitfire and GST Automatic Alarm. His first timepiece was a self-indulgent treat, purchased in 2002 after his first Super Bowl win. The IWC GST Chronograph Rattrapante confirmed his love for IWC Schaffhausen as a watch manufacturer, securing itself a place on the athlete’s wrist for the next five to six years. Not lost on Richemont, was Brady’s 2016 triumphs at Super Bowl 51, so Johan Rupert gifted Brady a very special one-of-a-kind IWC Big Pilot’s watch, subsequently piquing his interest in the Maison’s line of professional aviation tools. Brady also has a soft spot for the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar, which he’s been spotted sporting whilst out on romantic dinner dates with his supermodel wife Gisele Bundchen. Included within Tom Brady’s IWC watch collection are three timepieces in particular. The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun, the IWC Annual Calendar and the aforementioned IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar. Let’s take a look at these three timepieces in a little more detail…
IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun
The ref: IW389101 Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun has joined Tom Brady’s ever-growing watch collection and it’s not difficult to see why. The watch’s sleek black ceramic case gives the timepiece a resolutely modern look on the wrist. Suited to withstanding conditions experienced thousands of feet up in the air, the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun model has an anti-magnetic soft-iron inner case for protecting the Calibre 69380 from magnetic forces experienced at great altitude. From a practical point-of-view, the 60-meter water-resistant 44.5mm watch boasts a legible dial with luminous plots, a trio of chronographs placed in the 12-6-9 layout, a 46-hour power reserve and a day-date feature. Promoting comfort on the wrist is an ergonomically refined black textile strap that keeps the watch looking youthful when paired with any attire.
IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar
The IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar ref: IW503401 is clad in a deep midnight blue dial and fitted with a timeless black alligator leather strap. It’s undeniably the more technical of the three IWC watches and has likely been chosen by Tom Brady for its complexity and in-depth, high level of craftsmanship. The dial, despite providing every calendar feature, remains easy to read, and well proportioned. The 3 o’clock counter integrates a date ring with a power reserve indicator for the in-house Calibre 52615, while the 6 o’clock scale features the months of the year. At 9 o’clock IWC place the days of the week with a small seconds feature, intersected by a year aperture in white. To finish, the top counter at 12 o’clock is a double moon phase indicator that shows the moon in both the northern and southern hemispheres.
IWC Portugieser Annual Calendar
First off, the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Annual Calendar ref: IW503501 has a silver-plated dial which gives the timepiece a classic and sophisticated personality. The month, date and day present themselves together in arc-shaped apertures at 12 o’clock. Balancing this point of reference is the IWC brand lettering at 6 o’clock. Ideal as a timepiece for keeping on track of a busy lifestyle, the watch is the ultimate on-the-go companion which features two sub-scales at 3 and 9 o’clock offering a power reserve indicator for the Calibre 52850 and a running seconds display respectively. Understandably, with a 7-day power reserve, this IWC watch meets the requirements of a professional sportsman like Brady, enabling him to travel in comfort but also promising accuracy for those periods off the wrist.
