Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and then again post-Second World War, between the years 1951-1955. He was a noble prize-winning writer and historian. He was a wartime leader, a prolific painter and served the Spanish Army to fight in the ‘Cuban War of Independence’. He also had a favourite cigar to smoke and a soft spot for Cuervo y Sobrinos watches, which brought him to Havana more than once in his lifetime. Now, as a tribute to Sir Winston Churchill and his fondness for the bustling Havana streets, where many a glittering Hollywood actor has perused - the Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill ‘Sir Winston’ watch is an exclusive collaborative effort between us here at C W Sellors Jura Watches and the unique Cuban brand.

A Cuban heritage with Latin spirit

Strengthening our ties with expert luxury watchmaking, the Cuervo Y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill Salmon dial watch marks a first for us and a first for the Cuban watchmaker, which was founded back in 1882. Back when the brand was at its height of success, it furnished many an elite wrist. The company soon set up premises in La Chaux de Fonds, securely anchoring its expertise deep into the soil of Haute Horlogerie. Following a change in political regimes that played out in Cuba during the ’60s, the watchmaking company closed its doors and would not reopen them again until 1997. Luca Musumeci and Marzio Villa revived the company, injecting each timepiece thereafter with a strong Latin spirit. Eventually, after new investors bought into the company, Cuervo y Sobrinos was relocated once again to Le Noirmont, Switzerland where it now resides, collaborating with the likes of us. The inventor of the famous Landeron watch, Cuervo y Sobrinos has designed this tribute to Churchill in partnership with us at C W Sellors Jura Watches. The watch is exclusive to just 30 pieces and will be sold only in our boutiques until the end of the year. It boasts a mesmerising salmon-coloured dial with an exclusive guilloche surface technique that donates a true sense of depth to the design. The colour echoes the warmth and vibrancy of the city. Churchill had first visited Havana after he joined the Spanish army. Although only there for a few short weeks, his affection for the Cuban city and its legendary cigars grew. It would not be until after the Second World War that Churchill would visit Havana again – this time as an elder statesman. Here, with his wife Clementine, he visited the Cuervo y Sobrinos boutique and indulged in his favourite Romeo y Julieta cigars whilst staying at the esteemed Hotel Nacional. The “Robusto” name in the title of this new Cuervo y Sobrinos X C W Sellors watch relates to the “robust” cigar that Churchill liked to smoke.

The Cuervo y Sobrinos Robusto Churchill Salmon dial watch measures a 43mm diameter and has been crafted from lightweight titanium and robust stainless steel. The textured effect of the ‘Clous de Paris’ guilloche surface is an ocean of waves, swirls and curves. It creates pockets for light to dip in and out of with every slight movement of the wrist. Joining this stunning salmon pink canvas is a set of polished Arabic numeral hour markers alternated with shard-like indexes. The central hour and minute hands bulge towards the end before tapering into a sharp point, gliding over the “Cuervo y Sobrinos” lettering in a crisp black font below the 12 o’clock location. The brand emblem in silver and red tones also resides here, balanced by a legible day and a date function at 6 o’clock.
