In fact, legend has it that the model was conceptualised when Kurt Klaus and head designer Hanno Burtscher decided to take the Lepine moon phase pocket watch and make it into a wristwatch by adding lugs to each side of the case. The IWC Portofino Automatc Day & Night watch ref IW459801
New to the Portofino Automatic range is one of three 34mm Day & Night models. The reference IW459801 is a stainless steel model with an unadorned bezel, a silver dial and gold-plated elements. The model has been released alongside the reference IW659801, which presents itself via rhodium-coated appliques dressed against a deep blue dial, framed by a 66 diamond-set bezel on a stainless steel case and the Portofino Automatic Day & Night watch reference IW659802. This features an 18ct rose case with a diamond-encrusted bezel and a silver dial with gold-plated appliques. All three models, being part of the 34mm size range, come with a closed caseback and all offer 50-meter water resistance. The settings of each diamond in the new IWC Portofino Automatic Day & Night watch have also been recently redesigned by experts at IWC, enabling them to catch the light more effectively than ever before. Predominantly, the Portofino Automatic Day & Night watch by IWC will appeal to ladies with a preference for glamorous watch designs and fine jewellery.
The date at 6 o’clock on the dial of the watch is described by IWC as “charming” and a fitting description this is. Depending on whether it’s noon or midnight, you will see a sun or a moon motif displayed in the upper section of this feature, denoting whether it’s night or day. In true Portofino style, the dial of the watch features feuille-shaped hands and elegant stick markers around the hour track except for the 12 o’clock hour marker, which is instead represented by a Roman numeral. Above every hour marker on the dial is a delicate round brilliant-cut diamond – each one protected underneath a convex piece of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. The surface of the glass is also treated with anti-reflective technology to afford a clear view into the dial, rid of any undesirable glare.
