The Arnold & Son Perpetual Calendar watch has never been so full of meaning. Last year’s version celebrating the year of the tiger was an exceptional timepiece with beautifully detailed dial work incorporating mother of pearl, aventurine, hermatite and rose gold materials. The model followed on from the year of the ox watch, released just 12 months later as part of Arnold & Son’s approach to creating a series of timepieces that appeal to the Chinese market. The growing interest in the Chinese Zodiac calendar has given way to this niche opportunity for Arnold & Son who now releases a brand new model in the name of the year of the rabbit. The elegant timepiece demonstrates not only the brand’s expertise in masterful aesthetics but also its skill in creating works of art through complex and meticulously crafted dials, not to mention a fine watchmaking movement. Meet the new Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon “Year of the Rabbit” watch.
The year of the rabbit
The Year of the Rabbit on the Chinese Zodiac Calendar begins on the 22nd of January 2023. As a symbol of peace, longevity and prosperity, the rabbit sits gracefully against a mother of pearl and black aventurine backdrop in this design, signifying a year of hope for all who choose to wear it. The Chinese Zodiac repeats itself every 12 years and is represented by a different animal each year. Legend has it that the order of these 12 different animals relate to the Jade Emporer’s Race. The Chinese emperor was said to have chosen the order according to an organised race by which each animal would secure its position in the 12-year cycle depending on where it finished in the race. Those who were born in the year of the rabbit are said to be smart, docile and kind. If that sounds like you, you may want to take a closer look at this beautiful new Chinese Zodiac Calendar watch from Arnold & Son – masters of the highly collectable Perpetual Moon watch.
Arnold & Son’s new Chinese Zodiac calendar watch
The Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon “Year of the Rabbit” watch displays the golden rabbit sitting in a calm yet watchful pose against a black aventurine surface which sits in front of a captivating mother-of-pearl moon signifying the relationship between the two. The rabbit is interpreted as the moon’s loyal companion. In the legendary founding of the Chinese Zodiac, the rabbit inhabits a white jade moon to which it serves as a pet.
Thanks to a turning disc under the surface of the dial, the new Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon “Year of the Rabbit” watch displays the waxing and waning of the moon via a large aperture revealing the appearance of the crescent moon and its light. By night it glows majestically thanks to a generous helping of Super-LumiNova, creating an intriguing talking point to the design. Its detailed features are enhanced by painted elements in relief. Hand-finished attributes and attention to detail can be admired down to the nth degree, including features like the pagoda’s windows, hand painted with luminous material, and the deep black aventurine glass that makes up the disc that bears the stars. The golden rabbit, however, steals the show of this new Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon watch. Crafted in three dimensions, its realistic interpretation in 18ct rose gold displays fine fur detailing that has been hand engraved and hand brushed, adding depth and nuance to the design.
Inside the 41.5mm 18ct rose gold case of the new Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon “Year of the Rabbit” watch is the Calibre A&S1512. Its mainplate is rhodium-plated with radiating Cotes de Geneve stripes, whilst the bridges are polished and chamfered. The wheels of the movement are circular satin finished and the screws are beautifully blued and chamfered for added detail. This mechanical and manual winding movement provides a power reserve of 90 hours and performs at a rate of 21,600 oscillations per hour.
A domed anti-reflective and scratch-resistant piece of sapphire crystal creates a protective dome across the surface of the dial, helping to uphold a case water resistance of 30 meters. As well as astronomical moon phases on the front of the dial, a second moon phase indicator can be seen on the back of this Arnold & Son watch. Adding to its desirability all the more, the model has been produced in 8 exclusive editions only. The limited edition “Year of the Rabbit” watch from Arnold and Son is fitted on a black alligator strap with detailed platinum stitching, a matching 18ct rose gold pin buckle and a striking red strap lining that celebrates the lucky colour of Chinese symbolism,
