A Review of the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Skin Diver Green
Thursday - 01 February 2024
The captivating sunray green dial of the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Skin Diver watch is one of its most appealing features. Here’s a review of the 200-meter water-resistant dive watch.
The 1950s was the era of the dive watch and there beside other industry icons was Zodiac with the launch of its Super Sea Wolf watch. It was one of the world’s first purpose-built dive watches. Today, if you rummage through Zodiac’s current collections, the Super Sea Wolf is the dive watch that most closely adheres to the brand’s original dive watch DNA. Last year marked Zodiac’s 70th anniversary of the Super Sea Wolf. To celebrate, Zodiac launched a new Super Sea Wolf Skin Diver watch, clad in a mesmerising deep green dial. Today, we’re going to look at that model in some more detail.
That Green Dial…
I love green dials. That may be partly to do with green being my favourite colour, but most of all, I think green gives a luxury watch the edge over conventional colours like blue, black and silver. It’s the next level up without being too brash. It’s a sophisticated colour with so many layers, depths and shades to explore. Pretty much any green colour looks good on the dial of a luxury watch, but I can’t get enough of this Super Sea Wolf Skin Diver watch. Here’s why…
The new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Skin Diver lives up to its name, packing an impressive water-resistant capability of 200 meters into its design. Made from stainless steel, the dive watch is solid, robust and hard-wearing. Whether you choose to take this Zodiac watch down to 200 meters underwater or not, you can enjoy it for its all-round daily toughness. As per usual for the Super Sea Wolf, it features the shark tooth hour markers that contribute to the model’s legible dial. It also promises a compact 39mm diameter. Here are the details you’ll want to know if you’re toying with the idea of adding this new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Skin Diver to your collection.
The New Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Skin Diver Green
I mentioned that the watch wears with a compact and manageable 39mm diameter but I didn’t mention that is has lashings of Super-LumiNova material on its dial to keep you going long into the night or whilst partaking in daring underwater dives. That mesmerising emerald green dial colour is the richest of greens. Its sunray effect entrances as light invites itself to dance upon the surface of the dial in a rather unique way. Yes, green sunray dials are often seen in dress watches but seldom are they found in serious dive watches like this one. The shark tooth hour markers are crisp and sharp. They combine nicely with a set of tapering hour markers in an almost retro-beige colour.
The new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Skin Diver Green watch has a sapphire crystal glass front, surrounded by a unidirectional rotating timing bezel for measuring elapsed time underwater. It also features a solid screw-down caseback and a screw-down crown. Both work together to ensure a water-tight environment for the movement that lies at the centre of the case. Unlike the Huckberry watch recently released with a bronze bezel insert, this model features a steel bezel with a black ceramic insert.
This time-only dive watch follows a similar vintage-inspired feel as seen amongst its siblings from the Super Sea Wolf Skin Diver range. Its arrow-shaped markers are highly visible in the day or night and are accompanied by upside-down triangles with Arabic numerals that sit within these cardinal points around the dial. In the dark, they show up in black against the luminous material. The dauphine-shaped hands have also been treated with this same Super-LumiNova, glowing green in the dark.
Underneath the emerald green dial of this Super Sea Wolf Skin Diver watch is the automatic Calibre STP1-11, based on the core design of the ETA 2824. It produces a power reserve of 44 hours and beats at a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
Differing from so many other models from the Super Sea Wolf range, this new deep green Skin Diver goes without the vintage-inspired three-link stainless steel bracelet and instead features a more ornate-style 5-link stainless steel bracelet. It’s a bracelet design often seen in the brand’s Super Sea Wolf’s Compression models.
