A Look at the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm Watch

The recently released Hamilton Khaki Field 38mm watch is a downsized version of the larger 42mm model released by Hamilton in response to the brand’s avid devotees who longed to own the movie star watch seen in the popular Interstellar movie.

Hamilton has many attributes that make it such a widely appealing luxury watch manufacturer – one of them being its ability to listen to its audience when they want something. By doing so, Hamilton has been able to hone into its clientele much more specifically by tweaking its popular models to make them appeal to a much wider audience. Take, for example, this new Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm watch, released just last year. The original Hamilton Khaki Field Murph watch was first developed as a prop for Christopher Nolan’s epic sci-fi film, Interstellar. But Hamilton fans went crazy for it. So, what did Hamilton do? Made the watch available to the public, of course. But at a 42mm diameter, the size of the case was too large for many Hamilton enthusiasts, cue the new Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm watch – a downsized version of the original with much more manageable proportions.

The new rendition of the popular movie star watch is crafted from stainless steel and still evokes the powerful persona of the Murph albeit with smaller proportions. Its polished bezel is the slow-rise kind that gives way to a legible black dial displaying a time and day layout. Other features of the case include an unguarded crown at 3 o’clock and unchamfered lugs that look subtly athletic. At the front of the case, you get a piece of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass that has been treated with layers of anti-reflective material, whilst on the back of the case is a sapphire exhibition caseback that offers a clear view into the performance of the movement whilst it works. The latest Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm watch is also 100-meter water resistant.

Closely following its predecessor, the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm model has a black matte dial with Arabic numeral hour markers that have been executed in a beige colour. Since Hamilton specialists have downsized the case, other elements of the design have had to be factored in, such as the space given to each Arabic numeral. Bringing the hour track inwards to create a fuller display, the hour markers are closer together but not enough to make the dial feel cluttered. The cathedral-shaped Hamilton hands are also finished in a matching beige hue and have been treated with Super-LumiNova, enabling them to display the time clearly at night or in dark conditions.

The new Hamilton Khaki Field Murph watch has mildly futuristic aesthetics with crisp numerals that feature around the minute track at five-minute intervals. One subtle difference in the design of the second hand will be noticed by enthusiasts of the Murph, however. The second hand in the 43mm model had the word “Eureka” in morse code along its shaft, whilst the newer 38mm model features a cleaner and unadorned style. By making this change, the watch looks more like the original prop watch featured in the Interstellar movie.

The new Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm watch is powered by the ETA-based H10 movement, which offers an impressive 80-hour power reserve once fully wound and performs at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour. Matte blasted brushes adorn the movement and can be admired through a sapphire-backed case, not to mention a brushed cut-out rotor. You can enjoy the downsized Murph watch from Hamilton on a black alligator patterned leather strap, which gives the wristwatch an overall dressy look thanks to its beige contrast stitching.
