A Look at the Bulova Precisionist X Special Edition Chronograph
Monday - 13 September 2021
To celebrate ten years of the ground-breaking Precisionist watch, the new Bulova Precisionist X Special Edition chronograph watch is a broad 45mm polished black ion-plated stainless steel model housing a proprietary high-beat 262 kHz quartz at its heart.
2020 marked exactly ten years of the groundbreaking line of analogue chronographs by Bulova known as the Precisionist Chronograph. Earlier this year Bulova released the Precisionist X Special Edition Chronograph, with flashes of mint green seen in the dial’s indexes and hands. It showcases a new take on the classic Precisionist watch as explained by Jeffery Cohen, President of Citizen Watch America:
“Throughout the new assortment, you will see the utilization of textured elements like leather, rock, smoke, and sparks that inspired the new dial designs, allowing for an extraordinary and larger than life visual aesthetic.”
A little on the Precisionist design itself…
The Bulova Precisionist watch is an impressive design that has proven its popularity for years and there’s a few reasons as to why. Firstly, the watches from the collection are powered by a movement with a special three-prong crystal. This promises a vibrational frequency of 262 kHz compared to a standard quartz movement that offers a frequency of 32 kHz. Although quartz-powered, the Bulova Precisionist has a sweep-second hand that is normally associated with a mechanical movement. This is another appealing visual feature of the models found within the Precisionist watch family. The counterweight design found on the second hand along with the Infinity logo are hallmarks of Bulova’s accuracy. These symbols of quality are combined with a selection of strong, robust materials including 316L hypoallergenic surgical grade stainless steel cases, strong sapphire crystal glass tops and genuine leather bands.
To enhance toughness and resilience, Bulova Precisionist watches feature things like screw-down cases and screw-down crowns. Along with intricate design details and finishing touches that nod to the brand’s commitment to quality watchmaking - these wristwatches are a mix of complex architecture and high accuracy. Labelled as ‘Advanced Timekeeping at Its Best’ the Precisionist watch collection appeals to collectors who like their wristwatches to exude boldness and character, whilst offering quirks such as the graceful sweeping second hand mentioned earlier.
The new Bulova Precisionist X Special Edition Chronograph watch
Embracing the brand’s flair for creating statement-making case shapes that have gained the company such recognition so far, the Precision X Special Edition Chronograph watch has a memorable profile that instantly strikes a repour with the wrist. Crafted from polished black ion-plated stainless steel and with grey Damascus steel top inserts, the brawny-looking watch boasts a moiré light and dark pattern and comes in a new octagonal silhouette measuring 45x47mm. The mix of different finishes on the surface of the case gives the Bulova Precisionist X watch a multi-dimensional effect with angular details that surround a far from minimal dial.
The dial is black in colour and has a lot going on. Ideal for those who like technical-looking watches, the Precisionist X Chronograph watch features baton markers around the hour track highlighted in a mint-coloured luminous layer. The hands too have been treated with the same material, as well as some of the chronograph elements. The 12 o’clock counter combines both tenths and hundredths of a second into one sub-dial. The single and concise display is balanced by a retrograde sub-dial at 6 o’clock that tracks thousandths of a second. Other features on the dial include a small second sub-counter at 9 o’clock and a 12-hour totaliser at 3 o’clock. A date aperture resides at the 4:30 location around the hour track and the Bulova lettering is presented inside the 12 o’clock counter. Whilst the smoky translucent window that covers the date wheel and much of the lower hemisphere of the dial is an eye-catching feature in itself, the sweeping central chronograph hand and accompanying sub-dial hands become a visually engaging display of mesmerising whirring motions once activated.
The Bulova Precisionist X Special Edition watch is a chronograph model powered by an eight-hand quartz chronograph movement. It sits beneath a layered skeletonised dial. Bulova’s top tier, high-frequency movement – this proprietary high-beat 262 kHz quartz – is held inside a 50-meter water-resistant case. On the front side, the dial is protected underneath a curved scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass lens treated with anti-reflective technology.
The design of the new Bulova Precisionist X Special Edition watch is a play on materials. Inspired by leather, rock, sparks and smoke, this iteration, along with the rose gold-coloured model are dynamic and multifaceted timepieces that celebrate an important milestone in the brand’s history. The watch comes completed on a dark green leather strap with a deployment buckle and is limited to 100-pieces worldwide.
