A Look at the Bell & Ross BR 05 Gold Skeleton Limited Edition
Tuesday - 28 September 2021
Limited to just 99 pieces worldwide, Bell & Ross releases a new rose gold version of the BR 05 Skeleton watch, with an 18ct rose gold-plated movement exposed through the watch’s dial side. The BR 05 Gold Skeleton watch is available on a black rubber strap or a rose gold bracelet with a folding clasp.
If you’ve been a devoted Bell & Ross watch collector since the beginning, you will recall the moment the Paris-founded brand released a signature design that went on to become a mainstay in the company’s catalogue. The watch featured a circular dial, a square-shaped case and showcased a screw bolted down in all four corners of the case. The watch was called the BR 01. It went on to inspire other models like the BR 03 with their eye-catching designs inspired by aviation instrument dials seen inside fighter jets. Remaining true to this basic DNA, the BR 05 is an extension of this circle-come-square watch design. The watch was released in 2019 and tapped into a modern urban audience with its outline of a casual sports watch. Just last year, Bell & Ross released the BR 05 Steel and Gold alongside the Skeleton Blue watch. The latter followed in the footsteps of a previous skeletonized dial the year before with a silver-coloured movement. The BR 05 Skeleton Blue watch featured a transparent blue crystal dial that had been partially tinted to reveal elements of the CAL.321 working in the background.
The spectacle
Offering something new once more in what is already considered a crowded segment of the luxury sports watch category – the new BR 05 Skeleton Gold limited edition watch comes at the same time as the BR 05 Diamond watch configurations, which I covered here in more detail. Bell & Ross has fitted the instrument with the CAL.322, which has featured before in other models from the BR 05 family, namely the BR05A-GR-SK-ST/SST, BR05A-GR-SK-ST/SRB, BR05A-BLU-SKST/SST and the ref: BR05A-BLU-SKST/SRB. This is a time and date movement and becomes the spectacle of the design, with finishes and decoration exposed through the dial side of the watch. The self-winding movement is capable of providing an impressive 38-hour power reserve and performs at a rate of 28,800 oscillations per hour. It is also equipped with a stunning gold-plated 360-degree oscillating weight.
The case and dial of the new BR 05 Gold Skeleton Limited Edition
The reliable CAL.322 is fitted to the heart of a robust 40mm 18ct rose gold case, with finishes executed in satin-brushed and polished techniques. The screw-down crown, which sits at 3 o’clock on the case, is protected by a crown guard to shield the crown from shock and impact and to protect the internal environment from water leakage. In true BR 05 style, Bell & Ross selects the iconic circle within a square shape to reiterate the strength and influence of this popular model. The circular dial is nestled into a square-shaped case with a single decorative screw that bolts into all four of the corners of the case, creating an industrial-inspired look. The 18ct rose gold case of the BR 05 Gold Skeleton watch is also 100-meter water-resistant and features a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass front, treated with anti-reflective technology.
The backdrop behind the hours and hands on the dial of this BR 05 Gold Skeleton watch is an 18ct rose gold-plated movement. The gilded hour markers are baton shape and the central hands have been skeletonized. Both have been treated with Super-LumiNova and this, by night, simplifies the dial whilst assisting with accurate timekeeping.
The BR 05 Rose Gold Skeleton watch has an overriding sense of luxury and that is clearly the key message behind this design. That not all of Bell & Ross instruments manufactured in the “circle within a square” design code need to be so disciplined and regimented. The 40mm design plays on the company’s innovative use of materials and manufacturing techniques, finishing with a choice to be made between a black rubber strap with a satin-finished and polished 18ct rose gold folding clasp, or an 18ct rose gold satin-finished and polished bracelet with a folding clasp.
