A Look at the Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Calanda Limited Edition

The new Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Calanda watch was made in tribute to the first ship to have flown the Swiss flag and boasts the brand’s first fully recycled dive watch
Alpina’s approach to creating recycled watches has been impressive, to say the least, I recently covered another limited edition model from the Seastrong watch collection. The Alpina Seastrong Diver Gyre watch features a composite case material comprising 70% recycled PA taken from old unused fishing nets and 30% fibre glass to give it a tough water resistant bodywork. The watch was developed in a limited edition run of just 288 pieces worldwide and featured a two-toned NATO-style strap manufactured from recycled plastic bottles.
The Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Calanda watch is another beautifully made dive tool that boasts the brand’s first wristwatch to offer a 100% recycled case. The model is crafted from PuReSteel - a recycled stainless steel primarily sourced from the maritime shipping industry. The repurposed steel, taken from dismantled maritime carriers gives the Seastrong watch a whole new identity and comes fitted on a strap crafted from recycled plastic bottles from the ocean. The packaging too has been made from the same material. Just a few sheets of paper accompany this new Alpina Seastrong dive watch, demonstrating that the Swiss brand is really doing all it can to reduce its footprint.
The new Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Calanda watch, with its 100% recycled steel case, has been developed as a tribute to the Calanda ship – the first to have ever flown the Swiss flag back in 1941. Having assigned Basel as its home, the ship was dismantled in 1953. Based on the design of the Seastrong Diver 300 Automatic watch, this new model takes on a retro feel with shortened lugs, a cushion-shaped case and unidirectional rotating bezel.
Diving more responsibly
The new Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Calanda watch measures a 42mm diameter and features a 60-minute scale in relief upon the surface of its steel bezel. The bezel can be aligned with the minute hand on the dial and will rotate only in the counter-clockwise direction, ensuring dive time can never be accidentally knocked and extended. The case of the recycled steel dive watch is water resistant to 300 meters and features a screw-down crown to assist with this, stamped with the instantly recognisable Alpina logo engraved upon its surface.
The matte black dial of the new Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Calanda watch has a grained finish with hour markers that are smaller and more traditional in style. They feature a mixture of circular and rectangular shapes, filled with beige old radium-style luminescent material. The 12 o’clock location, however, features a triangular-shaped motif to match the same marker at 12 o’clock on the bezel. The hands too have been treated with the same vintage-inspired beige luminous material – both of which taper to a sword-shaped profile. The central second hand is fine and straight, with a red-coloured triangular base. Against this matte grained black dial is a minute track, highlighted in white around the edge of the dial and a date window located at 3 o’clock, set against a matching black background. The entire surface of the legible dial is protected by a piece of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass, treated with anti-reflective technology to assist with a glare-free view into the dial at any point of the day or night.
Inside the robust case of this new Alpina dive watch is the automatic Calibre AL-525, based on the Sellita SW200-1. It performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations and provides a power reserve of 38 hours once fully wound. It also comprises 26 jewels and is concealed behind a solid stainless steel caseback engraved with a picture of the Swiss Alps upon its surface and the iconic Alpine name. Limited to just 300 pieces worldwide, the new Alpina Seastrong Diver 30 Calanda watch is fitted on a black and grey PET strap crafted from recycled plastic bottles. To accompany this - a certificate of authenticity printed on FSC Recycled-certified paper and a single page warranty. The strap secures to the wrist with a stainless steel pin buckle engraved with the Alpina logo.
