A Look at the 2022 Hamilton Navy Frogman Watches
Saturday - 11 February 2023
The Navy Frogman from Hamilton is one of the watchmaker's most legible, accurate and distinguished dive watches. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it was the fearless Navy Frogmen's number one choice as a tool watch during the Second World War. It was also the brand’s first timepiece to appear on the silver screen during the 1951 smash hit movie “The Frogman”. From there onwards, the watch received a popular following amongst Hamilton fans and dive watch enthusiasts alike. Trusty enough to be used by military personnel but stylish enough to be enjoyed as a robust companion for all manner of outdoor and underwater scenarios, Hamilton released yet another model as part of this series last year. Built through and through for purpose and functionality, the most recent releases to join the Frogman watch collection boast a new look and an upgraded movement for promising more on-the-go precision and more style. That said, its utilitarian features remain the same, with a rotating bezel, a legible luminous dial, and a 300-meter water resistance.
There are four different variants of the new Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman to choose from. All share a black dial, however, two steel case versions have a matching black bezel with a khaki or black rubber band and one has a metal bezel and is fitted on a stainless steel bracelet. The last model has a black PVD-coated case and is fitted on a black strap to give the timepiece a more legible and stealth-like look. Rather than conforming to the route many renowned watchmakers take and reinventing a vintage watch from the past, Hamilton steers away from creating a tribute watch, instead marking a new chapter for the Hamilton Frogman with a modern twist that will appeal to a wider audience.
The new Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman watches are fitted with the brand’s reliable H-10 movement, with an impressive 80-hour power reserve. This power reserve should serve you well through an entire weekend should you need to alternate the model with another favourite. You can return to this trusty H-10-powered Hamilton watch on a Monday to find it has kept perfect timing whilst off the wrist. Despite all this, it’s unlikely you’d want to be without the watch for that long. The Hamilton Frogman has such a versatile styling that it pretty much pairs with any attire, especially since you get to pick from four variants. The H-10 movement is also fitted with a Nivachron balance spring, protecting the delicate parts of the movement from damage caused by magnetic fields, not to mention temperature fluctuations and shock.
The new Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman watches all span a broad and masculine 46mm diameter. These disruptive models are crafted from robust stainless steel and conceal their movements behind a sealed caseback that has been engraved with a scuba diving motif that pays homage to the roots of the collection and the model’s aquatic aspirations as a fully-fledged military tool. The true identity of the purpose-built tool watch has remained as evident as ever since the first Khaki Navy Frogman Automatic watch was released back in 2016. The dial of this watch features chunky and highly visible indexes, with an Arabic numeral at 12 o’clock. Other features on the dial include Super-LumiNova-coated elements and a vibrant orange accented minute hand. To match, the second hand has an orange-trimmed arrow-tipped end. Orange is a colour used frequently throughout the dive watch industry, since the colour is known to stand out in the deep and dark daring depths of the ocean, making for a particularly legible face when measuring elapsed time underwater.
The new Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman watch also has a unidirectional rotating bezel in a matching black colour for two of the models (fitted on a black or khaki green rubber strap) whereas the other steel model features a grey dial and comes fitted on a stainless steel bezel to match its bracelet strap. The black PVD version with a black dial also features a black bezel as well as a sleek black rubber band. Each bezel has clearly visible markings on a 60-minute scale visible upon its surface. A piece of scratch-resistant and antireflective sapphire crystal glass then attaches across the top of the dial, protecting each model from scratching, dust, denting, moisture, heat and light damage.
