Watches "The New Indicators Of Status"
Wednesday - 15 February 2012
Writing in the Wall Street Journal, journalist Ken Kessler charts this “Great Watch Revolution” back to the 80s when vintage watches became more popular as a backlash against mass-produced watches. Timex and Accurist watches were the original indicators of style and taste when it came to watches, he said.
As interest in watches has grown, luxury watch brand names have become more well-known. For example, Rolex watches were once associated solely with divers but the brand is now a highly aspirational one which almost everyone has heard of. This was boosted even further recently when Don Draper from Mad Men was seen wearing a Rolex watch throughout the popular series.
The writer says that now that people are more interested in and knowledgeable about watches, “one's choice of watch is as important as the quality of the handbag, the cut of one's suit, the appropriateness of a tie's pattern, the height of the heel.”
