Seiko Unveils Prospex Speedtimer Oregon22 Limited Edition SRQ041

Limited to 400 pieces, the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Oregon22 Limited Edition watch celebrates the brand’s role as Official Timekeeper to the World Athletics Championship for the seventeenth year running.

Having delivered consistently to the sports industry for over 50 years, Seiko’s track record in providing precision timekeeping in the form of several timing devices from as far back as the 1960s has led to its ever-present position in the realm of sports watches today. So, if you’re a fan of track and field, you’ll no doubt be more than familiar with Seiko’s chronographs and stopwatches. This year, to mark Seiko’s 17th consecutive year in providing impeccable timing equipment to the World Athletics Championship, it releases a limited edition Prospex Speedtimer watch named the Prospex Speedtimer Oregon22 Limited Edition SRQ041.

This year at the 2022 World Athletics Championship, Seiko’s name will appear at the Eugene stadium in Oregon as it prepares to keep time for the World Athletics Championship for the seventeenth year in a row – this time with the new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Limited Edition watch. It pays homage to a much earlier timepiece – the brand’s first automatic chronograph with a vertical clutch and column wheel – the Speedtimer – released in 1969. That’s not to say that Seiko wasn’t already making history with plenty of sports timing equipment before then, but since the design of the 1969 Speedtimer Chronograph was more accurate, it addressed some issues around the traditional chronograph used during this era, thus becoming an important landmark in Seiko’s heritage.

The new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Oregon22 Limited Edition SRQ041

The new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Oregon22 Limited Edition watch has a unique dial colourway and a specially stamped sapphire crystal glass caseback that not only references this year’s championship event but serves as a viewing lens into the performance of one of Seiko’s precise automatic movements with a vertical clutch and column wheel. The watch’s stainless steel case is reinforced with a super-hard coating and is integrated with 100-meter water resistance. Its 42.5mm diameter meets with a thickness of 15.1mm in height – its architecture displaying a beautiful mix of brushed and polished accents. Over-sized piston push-pieces at 2 and 4 o’clock convey the all-important “sports watch” look that Seiko has long been respected for, harking back to some of the brand’s 1960s stopwatches.

Designed to evoke the texture of sand on the track, it is clear that the grey grained dial of the new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Oregon22 Limited Edition watch has been very cleverly and carefully considered. Seiko’s iconic yellow colour seen throughout its catalogue of sports timing instruments is used subtly throughout the display and can be seen in the hand of the 30-minute elapsed time counter at 9 o’clock and its central chronograph second hand, which curves at the tip to align neatly with the dial’s minute track, highlighted by a matching yellow “60”.

Opposite the 30-minute counter is a small second sub-counter located at 3 o’clock on this grainy grey dial and has been recessed into the surface of the display like its opposing counter. Snailed interiors and white markings also help to make the details in these sub-counters more easily readable. The hour markers are represented in double-faceted profiles, whilst white luminous dots on the adjacent track assist with timekeeping in the dark, as do the central luminous-coated hands.

As mentioned earlier, the sapphire crystal glass caseback of the new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Oregon22 watch is stamped with the logo of the World Athletics Championships Oregon 22. Behind this, however, is the peerlessly performing Seiko Calibre 8R46, which, like its 1969 ancestor, features a column wheel and vertical clutch to enhance precision and durability. Derived from the 8R series, it performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a 45-hour power reserve. In addition to its central timekeeping and chronograph functions, it provides a date at 6 o’clock below the “Automatic” lettering. The new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SRQ041 Limited Edition watch is fitted on a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp but also comes with an additional sporty black calf leather strap detailed with yellow stitching and a stainless steel deployment clasp.

Without a doubt, the new limited edition Seiko Prospex Speedtimer World Athletics watch is cool and sporty with some subtle details that really pay tribute to Seiko’s journey as a manufacturer of world-class sports watches. There will be just 400 lucky owners of the limited edition model – each one symbolic of Seiko’s role in precision timekeeping for the sports industry and its contribution to the field of accurate chronographs.
