Leap of Time – the New Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour Watches

Few things garner as much attention as something like the Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour – a concept that sees the dial of the watch replaced by the case in what can only be considered a more simplified, pared-back, but in equal measure, elegant take on the traditional wristwatch. Introducing the Terra Nova Jumping Hour Bronze – a complete first for the British brand and a design that offers the traditional Bremont collector something completely different to enjoy.  The watch has been released alongside a more conventional steel model, which is equally attractive and presented on a black gloss dial.

Thoughtful In Design, Compact on the Wrist

It appears that Bremont has its finger on the pulse right now. Having gone through a huge upheaval and a significant brand refresh last year, you'd never know if you were to look at the manufacturer now and its enticing range of Altitude, Supermarine and Terra Nova watches. The Terra Nova may not be the historically relevant Bremont watch we would have associated with the brand 2 years ago. However, this is undoubtedly the Henley-on-Thames brand’s new DNA, and watches like the Jumping Hour command huge wrist presence.

The Bremont Terra Nova has a tonneau-shaped case and comes in 38mm and 40.5mm case sizes. We can attest to the compact proportions that both sizes give the wrist, appealing to those who like to stay in the sub-40mm zone. Both the style and design of the new Jumping Hour watches capture the contemporary edge of watchmaking while also nodding to past retro models. They’re powered by an entirely new Jumping Hour calibre that has been created in conjunction with Sellita, which slips nicely into the ruggedly elegant proportions of the new bronze and steel iterations – designs that are clearly inspired by military pocket watches of the 20th century.

A Retro-Futuristic

The bronze watch, enrobed in cupro-aluminium bronze, is a 38mm limited edition model with apertures that display information in a vertical formation, while the steel model is the larger of the two, bearing 40.5mm dimensions and featuring a black gloss dial. Both models are fitted on the brand’s quick-release bracelet in their respective materials, with curved links that elegantly form a flow throughout the band, ending in a butterfly clasp at the fastening end. There’s also a leather strap option for both models – a black for the non-limited edition, and a tan brown for the bronze. There’s a slight difference in water resistance, too; the bronze is equipped with 30M, while the black and steel will suffice for more adverse weather and slightly more demanding environments.

Intuitive Timekeeping

Bremont made sure to keep the design of the new Terra Nova Jumping Hour watches simplified and cohesive. The steel 40.5 Jumping Hour shows a centrally mounted seconds hand, whilst the hours and minutes are presented at 9 o’clock. The overall design captures the look of the 1970s, fortifying a retro-futuristic aesthetic. Triangles at the cardinal points on the black gloss dial, along with the hour numerals and the seconds hand, are all unique to this design.  Meanwhile, the Terra Nova Jumping Hour Bronze has apertures aligned vertically from top to bottom, giving it a completely unique look and a significant step away from the traditional analogue dial. Infused with vintage charm, the solid caseback matches that of the steel version, with a map engraved in relief, highlighted in a higher resolution for the UK.

The Engine

Inside the new Terra Nova Jumping Hour watches by Bremont is an equally new movement – the Calibre BC634, which beats at a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of 56 hours. Bremont very accurately captures the zeitgeist of the Jumping Hour era here, which soared to popularity during the 19th and 20th centuries, originating with a distinct Art Deco influence. With the ability to observe the hour disc jumping to the next hour at the precise time in which the minute hand makes a complete revolution, the charm of the Terra Nova’s design is palpable. It celebrates not only a unique mechanism, but also Bremont’s ability to measure time in a visually enticing way.
