Introducing the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway Watches
Wednesday - 03 August 2022
New for 2022, Cuervo y Sobrinos pays homage to the famous American writer and journalist, Ernest Hemingway, who shared a love for the watchmaker’s Cuban roots and its unique culture.
Amongst Cuervo y Sobrinos’ elite list of clientele is American journalist and writer Ernest Hemingway who enjoyed the watchmaker’s Cuban culture when he moved there during the 1930s. As a matter of fact, he spent the last two decades of his life capturing the beauty of Cuba through his work. This shared love has inspired the design of Cuervo y Sobrinos’ new Historiador watch – the Hemingway. Named after the writer are four models that have been designed in collaboration with Hemingway Limited, founded by the famous writer’s son. Meet the black, silver, cream and brown versions of the new vintage-inspired Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watch.
Shared Cuban roots
The story of the watchmaker, Cuervo y Sobrinos began in 1882. A few years before that, Ramon Fernandos Cuervo, an immigrant from northern Spain, established a jewellery store in Hanava and it was this business that became the precursor to the Cuervo y Sobrinos watches that followed. The brand with Latin DNA has a strong and recognisable signature look that mixes traditional watchmaking values with its Latin legacy, evoking quality, creativity and elegance. In 1882 Don Baldomero, Don Teodomiro, Don Jose Maria, Don Armando, Don Placido and Don Lisardo all joined the business which, at the time, was located on a small street. Soon the business grew and established a reputation for itself. Styled on the wrists of some of Hollywood’s favourite stars, the company soon began enjoying the height of its success. Many prestigious brands such as Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe and Rolex created exclusive watches just to have their name associated with Cuervo y Sobrinos, bearing its name upon their dials.
After acquiring an exclusive and dedicated customer base, Cuervo y Sobrinos sadly met its demise in the 1960s, partly due to the Cuban revolution and the crushing effect of the quartz crisis, which swopped in during this era. It would be 1997 when the company would relaunch. Since then, Cuervo y Sobrinos has been paying homage to its Cuban roots ever since. Many watches pay tribute to the area’s rich heritage in tobacco manufacture, whilst others pay homage in other ways, which brings us on to the new Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watches for 2022.
Ernest Hemingway completed a total of 7 novels during his time in Cuba – one of which won the Nobel Prize in 1954 for literature. The Old man and the Sea told the story of a Cuban fisherman. He dedicated the prize to the nation. Hemingway was not only known for his preference for the Floridita daiquiri, but also for his interest in imported Swiss timepieces.
The new Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watches
First off, you simply cannot miss the lug design of the new Historiador Hemingway watches by Cuervo y Sobrinos. They look as though they could just as well be inspired by the tailfins of 1950s American cars. The four new models are all crafted from polished stainless steel and measure a case depth of 11.75mm and a width of 40mm. Dial-wise, there is a choice to make between the more classic black and silver models to the warming vintage tones of cream and brown. These dials are all protected by a strong double curved piece of sapphire crystal glass. The back of each model is also engraved with the “Hemingway” lettering, along with a large “H” letter, adorned with a marlin to reference the writer’s famous fisherman novel.
The new Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watches are all 100-meter water resistant and consolidate a retro mood with crisp Arabic numeral hour markers around the edge of the dials and a splash of red seen in the Ernest Hemingway reference above 6 o’clock. The five-minute increments seen around the minute track in each new model are also highlighted in the same red hue. The flange of each model is inscribed with the words; “In order to write about life, first you must live it” – the words of Hemingway himself. During the night, the Arabic numeral hour markers and, hands illuminate clearly thanks to plenty of Super-LumiNova material. At the 12 o’clock location you can see the brand’s coat of arms sitting with pride. Limited to 140 pieces each are the brown and cream models, whilst the black and silver iterations are sold together and are exclusive to just 30 pieces. On the side of these cases is an 18ct gold plaque and both models are displayed inside a travel humidor case. To transform the look of these models, you can switch the brown leather bands with the two additional black leather straps supplied with each purchase. Inside the new Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watches is the CyS 5121 automatic calibre, based on the Sellita SW200-1. It provides a steady power reserve of 38 hours once fully wound and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
